Outer Shell of Muffler is rotten?

On my 1995 Nissan Maxima my outer shell of muffler is rotten pretty bad, starting rust out and peel off.

Does this mean I need to get a whole new muffler? (Like the chrome tip, gasket-exhaust flange, insulator, or the pipe for exhaust?)

If so what are some good mufflers to get that are rust resitant and are better than the factory but not super expensive?

-- I want it to be pretty silent/quiet

That happened to me... however theres no other way other than going custom. Ultimate protection against rust comes from stainless steel.

its happening to mine right now. It is peeling off in HUGE chunks. I had to cut a piece off with metal snips because it was bent down and looked real funny. I just want to get a Greddy SP2 or Apexi WS catback.

your best bet for cost purposes would be to talk to warpspeed about one of their rear sections. They have inexpensive muffer and tip options that look decent. That is what I suggest unless you feel like going with a complete aftermarket cat-back.

Im new to all this and car talk, lol.

Nto sure what you mean when you say "It seems like I want and all new catback aftermarket set"

--
Maybe I wasnt clear enough...
My muffler's outer shell is rotting and I am told I need to get a new muffler and I got about 3 months till it starts leaking. I dont want another factory muffler because it costs around 700 and is not even rust resitant or chrome.

I want a nice chrome rust resitant replacement

Ant, what muffler would you suggest for the factory sound with aftermarket appearance and performance, cuz I'm having this same problem.

Sean05, I like your wheels.

A stock muffler...

A catback is an exhaust from the catalytic converter all the way back. And I have a Flowmaster 80 series muffler

Mine has been like what you describe for 2 years now. I'm not sure who told you that you've got 3 mos.

Once again, there is a lot of misconception. You want chrome rust-resistant. Another person said stainless steel is the best fighter of rust.

Let's use some common sense here. My muffler has been on my car for 83 months now, and still works. That's a lot of salt it's seen in 7 years and 104k. I'd say the OEM aluminized muffler is pretty darn good. It's not cheap, it's about $180 discount. But it doesn't have that annoying buzz of a SP2, etc.

Did you know I can go to the dollar store and buy a 1-qt stainless steel mixing bowl? Got some nasty seams and is poorly constructed, but doesn't rust. If it were a muffler, I'm not so sure it'd do very well. There is this weird factor called heat.

Yes, that is about the best you can get. I have one. Fitment good, quality is great, sound is fairly quiet.

But from what you have stated you don't want a complete cat-back and don't want to spend a bunch of money. So follow through what I recomended and talk with warpspeed, you can see their products at www.warpspeedperformance.com If you called them and said you were looking for a replacement muffler with a nice tip they will be able to help you out.

WHen I talked to my local car reapir man he said it owuld be around 700 for the muffler but he could do it all for 500 for me since hes a family friend.

If your saying the OEM that I have onmy car is only 180 where is he getting 700 - 500 from?

What annoying sound does the SP2 make?

-

Does the SP2 link I provided come with cat back and muffler? If so then 506 dollars is fine for that... by expensive I mean around 700!

Is the catback the pipe underneath the car that leads to the muffler? If so the part under the front of the car is rusted

The muffler on my '91 was like that for almost 3 years. every once in a while when it started hanging down too much I would pull that part off. It is only the outer shell so as long as its not leaking then why replace it. And if your "family friend" is charging you $500 to replace a muffler and telling you that you only have three months left, I would get a new "family friend" to fix your car.

My muffler has the same "shell" starting to peel off. I didnt have any problems passing emissions, so as long as that isnt an issue, and it isnt effecting the noise leve, I would be patient and see what the best deal you can come across is.

I have a 97 Maxima with 175k on it. I drive it and take good care of it via routine maintenance...runs like a champ. Before winter, I decided to get the whole muffler and pipe back from the catalytic converter replaced with a new Nissan stock assembly. My old muffler was peeling rust and the heat shield was coming off...I had the money and decided on some preventive maintenance. Sure...it I wanted...I could start dumping loads of money into the car to increase performance...but, for me it is not worth it.

Just curious, why is there "no other way than going custom"?
Why wouldnt an ordinary aftermarket catback solve his problem?
Most catbacks are SS or an aluminized steel which should aslo hold up for quite some time.
Also, if he's just looking to replace the muffler and keep his OEM piping, why couldnt he just buy an aftermarket muffler?

Because other than the HKS Axle back the stock muffler is the only other one that will fit in like stock.

What I meant is if you go custom you'd have to go to an actual muffler shop to cut, weld and put on a few hangers (obviously you know its not a big deal) and not just have a mechanic do it in their driveway. A catback is always a good idea but I got the impression he just wanted a muffler alone.

If you're looking for a cheap muffler, then just get the Dynomax Clone from this site for $42 then have a muffler shop weld it on for about another $50 or so.

http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...17748&x=10&y=2

If you don't know what a catback is then you probably don't need one. A Y pipe removes the pre cats and frees up a few HP.

Not too bad since the cat is pretty expensive itself.

Why replace the cat too? Cat's dont even generally go bad at all unless there is something severely wrong with your car that causes it to go bad.

And I agree with the custom exhaust. I had mine done yesterday, and I love it. I paid $275 for custom bent catback with a glasspack and a decent muffler (Bullet) with a nice chrome tip, all completely welded (no pipes bolted together, tip welded on) with 4 year gaurantee on pipes and lifetime on muffler.

Talk about a good deal.

And it would have been only $350 for a full flowmaster or dynomax system, completely welded, same garauntees.

exhaust 101
Headers bolt to the engine
Y-pipe bolts to headers join together (like a Y) and runs to the catalytic converter
Catalytic converter is an emissions control device
Cat back is everything from the catalytic converter to the exhaust tip including the muffler which controls the sound.

Did I forget anybody?
