Broken Crazy Erratic Speedometer

Im pretty sure its just the VSS, but today when I was driving it stayed at 0 then started dancing all around from 20-50mph until I hit 60 and then it read accurately.

I was just wondering if anyone has had this, or have another idea on what else it could be. I dont think the gauge cluster is messed up cause everything else is fine.

Know where to get a good price on one

My max has been killing me since december... KS, Starter, alternator, belts, and now I think I have an exhaust leak. This winter sucks.

Is your CEL currently on? Ever pulled a VSS code before?

I've had the code before but not the kind of symptom you described.

h2kfrosty has this problem on his beater. Although the whole gauge cluster is basically broken. It was converted to custom indiglo with LED needles before he bought it. Now the water temp doesn't work at all, the speedo does what you described, and the gas gauge is at 7/8 at full and will kill the car if at the E. I am not sure if it is the VSS (among other sensor problems) or the gauge cluster is just whacked all together.

I had a 96 Pathfinder and had the same problem. It would read fine until it hit 20 - 30 mph the it would jump up to 50 60 mph, Then once I pass 30 it would work fine. I got a friend who one of the top guns at Star Nissan service and he told me it was the speedo head unit in the cluster. I replaced it for 240 bucks and it worked fine after that.
