? about Intake Air Temp. Sensor

I recently bought a maxima and the previous owner had the ghetto cone intake setup as shown here:

http://www.brianv.net/mods/filter/

I have since removed the cone, put in a K&N panel filter and hacked the airbox/resonator. While doing this I noticed a sensor was missing from the upper part of the box, what is the sensor for? I found it dangling in the engine bay and havn't put it back on yet, but I'm wondering if it is messing up my gas mileage.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Mine's been dangling for 2 years now.
