Whoa.........talking about bringing a very old thread back to life!

Anyhow, I just replaced both rear rotors and pads this weekend. Total cost = $90. I did all the work. I noticed that a pad in the driverside-rear caliper is majorly worn down, but the others aren't. So it looks like that caliper might be sticking. Anyone know of a good place to get calipers that won't break the wallet?

Both rears froze at around 130,000 miles. Cost was arond $150 after core exchange for both. Also replaed the pads at that time. Could have had it done in around 2 hours if I had all the right parts at the same time and if I had done it before.

Replacing both rears, because of rust! Plus, the right rear froze up a while back, but now it's woking.

brake calipers? i dont see why anyone would change them unless upgrading or repairing... the maxima brakes are exceptional, i have 150k on the chassis and the rotors and calipers are the same ones from the day it came out of the factory. the only thing i ever changed was the pads at 130k miles and that was only because i was putting in a new motor and had extra money and decided what the hell... it didnt even need new pads at that time. moral of story, learn to drive without using the brakes.

My right rear started to grab badly so I had them both replaced. I paid $232 for loaded calipers from O'Reillys. I have 137k on the old Max.

I have fairly new rotors and my braking is the pits. I feel a pulsing (no ABS) that won't quit, my front driver and rear driver stick, and my left rear seized (but I broke the seize and it's fine now). I think new ones would be great. I have driven some older cars, and I love the power of the braking--but my brakes have never been exceptional, always smushy and sloppy--even with new pads and new rotors. Calipers next? I think so...

I just replaced the rear calipers, 210k miles but now found out that the brake cable is frozen going to the right rear. So when you pull the emergency brake, only the left side holds. Big pain to replace the cable since I think it comes as one assembly.

My Maxima needs a new front passanger side caliper, and when I get off the freeway the car feels like a big massage chair! :P

FYI: I'm not going to waste 10min. and read all the previous posts, but...
Every car I've owned in the past, I've never had a problem with pistons siezing on a caliper. That is until my max with the rear rotating pistons. Passenger rear piston siezed on me last week, and after replacing the caliper and inspecting the driver's side caliper, I'm prolly gonna replace that one too in the next few months. Doesn't feel right. I know some mustang guys have the same problem. Never ever had this problem with normal calipers.

BTW, in my opinion, 4th gen Maxima's were fitted with some of the poorest OEM brakes given their weight/performance out of a lot of cars i've driven.

I have not yet. But i was thinking about getting crossed drilled disc and new calipers. I dont need the 4 piston ones, I was just going to replace with same quality (maybe prettier)

Any suggestions on what ones to buy? Stock?

I had to replace the driver front caliper because the piston was not able to be pushed back in while installing new rotors and pads...my rear pass. caliper has to be replaced soon, had a hard time turning it back in while installing new rotors and pads last week

I just replaced both of my rear calipers last week. The piston on the driver side caliper stuck, so I replaced that and both sets of pads. Took it for a test drive and the passenger side was smoking, turns out one of the pins on the caliper bracket froze so I had to replace that caliper also. That taught me not to skip the caliper pin lubing part next time hah.

And forced us to hand over a check for them before they'd pass our safety inspection on the condition that they'd do the work the next day.....like I say, LONG story....but we needed the car registered THAT DAY and needed the inspection.

WE called around the next morning, and the local Nissan dealer's main service guy said he'd never ever in 10 years working on Nissans, replaced a caliper in one.
Had the car looked at, at another place, guy said calipers were TOTALLY FINE.
I was just wondering how common it was to actually replace them on this car, since the Nissan dealer said it wasn't.

Dont believe eveything, that everyone tells you... Its not always true, I just recently replaced mine as they were sticking.

Another good example of this is the guy at my near by dealership told me that he never saw a knock sensor replaced. I took mine out that day and it was cracked in half... Goes to show you

I think I might be having a similar problem. My Rear/passenger side caliper seems to be seized. I'm just thinking this because the wheel does not turn freely like the other side. This was after I replaced the pads and rotors.

I'm not sure where the pin is, but I really hope this might be the problem as opposed to replacing the whole caliper. I'm not sure exactly what the pin is? Is it the part that springs back, and is covered by the rubber tube that stretches and holds the grease? Because I checked the caliper and one of them was fine and the other was definately stuck. If this is the problem do you know how I can fix it? Would I have to go to a nissan parts dept to get a new pin? or would normal auto stores carry this item? Thanks for any help/info you can give me.

Anybody who's looking for a BRAND NEW pair of rear calipers should take a look @ this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Maxim...QQcmdZViewItem

ONLY $150 shipped! I just got them yesterday. My rear left caliper totally froze, and the right rear one is on it's way as well, and the e-brake doesn't work. Hopefully i'll get these installed and see some improvements on braking. I already have new cross-drilled/slotted rotors which helped overall, but i still have to really push the brake pedal down. So hopefully it'll be all good after i get these installed.

The pressure issue is more than likely boiled out fluid or low fluid level or possibly a leak. The brakes are self adjusting so pad wear does not play a significant part in pedal travel/pressure.

Just curious, if the calipers are leaking, is it possible for that brake fluid to mess up a brand new set of rims???

update, i had two new rear calipers installed last week. The brake pedal is as mushy as ever. The pedal goes 1/2 of the way down until i see some results, but a pinch more stops the car dead in its tracks. So for some reason the pedal got mushier, but the braking is better.

have you changed your brake lines also not necessarily braided stainless steel but new lines period)? did a complete fluid flush? On one of my old cars, the lines were so old that i had a mushy feelings also. stomped as hard as i could on the brakes out of curiosity (thank god i was already parked) and the line just burst open.

I guess somewhere down the road i'll have someone flush my fluid and look @ my lines. The guy that did the calipers usually just does ONLY what i tell him to and ONLY with the parts that i've provided. So i don't think that he check the lines or anything. Meh, i'll see someone else about that later.
