Knock sensor question
Knock sensor question
My mechanic was diagnosing the CEL, and found I have two bad parts in the EVAP system, and also a knock sensor code. He ordered parts to fix the evap problems (it's being replaced as I type), and he said we might be able to just leave the knock alone for now and see how it goes. Is this OK to do?
I did do some searching, and it seems in general I could just notice some sluggishness with my 5sp, but only when I push it, like WOT? Knock should set me back about $100 if I replace, then installation.. who knows.
Thanks.

The KS is something that you can do with your own tools -- do not pay for it to be installed. Yea, it will cost about $100 depending on where you get it from, but it will be worth it. I just replaced mine and it is amazing. It shouldn't be bad for anything in particular, you might see a slight decrease in gas efficiency, but other than that, it just enhances the driving experience.
Oh, and I really took notice of my failed KS when I WASN'T pushing it -- the hesitation under 3k was killing me.

Thanks. I'll def. look into replacing the knock myself.
I'm so pissed off right now. I think my mechanic thinks I'm some rich kid with buckets of money.. charged me $105 for "diagnosing" the CEL problem, then a total of $168 for replacing the EVAP control valve. Does $105 for diagnosing a CEL problem sound a little high? Damn. I seriously want to buy a jack and learn to become a DIY'er.

Err.. $105 geezus.
Do you have a Autozone near you? It's free.
Seriously how hard is it to plug in a device and read off it?
Doesn't take a genius to read off the screen and match it to a trouble code.

i just got my maxx and needed to pass emissions, but in ct you cant if your CEL is lit. so they failed me, and i went home and read about extracting the diagnostic codes myself. got the code 0304, which in OBDII is 0325 i believe. that code means "knock sensor circuit, Bank 1". Basically there is something wrong with the first bank knock sensor, and since there is only one sensor in our maximas, there is only one bank. I tested the KS resistance, and bingo, there was none. Ordered a new KS for about $130, installed it in 1 hour. end of story. car runs fine, and the emission station mechanics were really pissed that i fixed it myself after all the crap they tried selling me about something being wrong with the ECU... watch out for those.

I can never say it enough...I hate dealers and repair shops!
