Hey guys and gals,

Did anyone here change their power steering pump? Mine is making noise. It sounds like a snare drum when I accelerate.

Its about the only thing I have never done on a maxima but I looked underneath and it seem like you need to take out a lot of stuff to get at the PS Pump.

Anyone have any helpful hints? I dont feel like taking my entire stock Y pipe out.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

If necessary, remove the air cleaner duct and the air cleaner.

Remove the drive belt from the air conditioning compressor, if equipped.

Loosen power steering pump belt adjustment as follows:

Loosen the pivot and mounting bolts.

Loosen the idler pulley locknut and turn the adjusting nut counterclockwise to remove the power steering belt.

Loosen the power steering hoses at the pump and remove the bolts holding the power steering pump to the bracket.

Disconnect and plug the power steering hoses and remove the pump from the vehicle.

To install:

Using new O-rings, connect the power steering hoses to the steering pump.

Install the power steering pump and secure it with its mounting bolts. Tighten the front and rear mounting bolts to specifications.

Install the remaining components in the reverse order from which they were removed.

Connect the negative battery cable.

Fill the power steering system, start the engine and turn the steering wheel from side-to-side to bleed air from system.

BLEEDING

Fill the pump reservoir and allow to remain undisturbed for a few minutes.

Raise the vehicle until the front wheels are clear of the ground.

With the engine off, quickly turn the wheels right and left several times, lightly contacting the stops.

Add fluid if necessary.

Start the engine and let it idle.

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 with the engine idling.

Stop the engine, lower the vehicle until the wheels just touch the ground. Start the engine, allow it to idle, and turn the wheels back and forth several times. Check the fluid level and refill, if necessary.

Thanks dude. but the problem is that the rear power steering bolt is way inside and there's no way to get a tool or a hand in there without taking off a crapload of stuff.

Thanks though. I'll just have to take the exhaust apart
