Hello fellow maxima owners . 've posted this same comment on NissanForums, and only came up with possible wheel bearing problem. But Anyway. I have a 97 max with 84K miles on it. I've owned it going on a year and half. The noise i hear started rougly 4-5 months ago. IT sounds like i have an exhaust leak in teh system, (kinda like a honda fart can, but slightly quieter, i dont know if it helps) But the sound only occurs when i'm at 2Krpm to 2500rpm. I checked the exhaust system and found some heat shields rusted so i removed them, but its still there. I did notice that when i had to carry 2 50lbs bags of Salt in my trunk the sound was somewhat almost gone. But also recently i was carrying around a 17" chrome wheel/tire from a Lexus GS in mytrunk and the sound was their too. so i'm not sure if the weight in the trunk helps or not. I'm just confused why it would make that sound. I see no like odd reaction from the car it drives normal (to me) please help.

i'm having that same problem... ive been told its the inside of the muffler rotting out... i kno the outer shell on my muffler is gone... mine started this winter and has gotten worse... im planning on just getting new catbak exhaust this spring

Maybe the exhasut hangers on your system prolly arent tight enouph.
