tranny went...
Driving back to work today and my 1st and 2nd gear ( 5spd) seamed to wine. Minutes later i find my self rolling down the hill and my car will not go into gear. The stick itself went in but it just was not engaging. I pulled over and walked to work. After work I swing by my car to grab a few things from it and see that it is leaking a lot of tranny fluid. Well now this has been my 2nd problem with 5pds maximas both 96's, i can vouch for the maxima trannys as being sh*t. I am assuming i am going to need a new/rebuilt tranny, I might as well replace the clutch and flywheel while i am at it, any opinions?

rmurdoch - My care has about 135K on, I bought it with 103, and i have not replaced the clutch yet so i dont know when the last time it was replaced.
MDeezy - I was thinking it was my throw out bearing because i have heard that the throwout bearing seams to make that wineing noise. but would that cause it to leak my tranny fluid out when it broke down?
MaxsRock323 - Yeah I am getting a tow truck to pick it up tomorrow, it just bums me out ya know. Your from cheyney? do i know you? i live in cheyney also! Have u seen my car?

I had the whining noise in 1st gear for awhile, then suddenly i heard it in second, and i knew right away wow this cant be good, and then it sounded like my tranny started making weird clicking noises. and i just knew that this sh*t is going to go and it did. (the 2nd gear whining and clicking of the trans started in the same 5 min ride to work) I am hoping it might be a hose that just leaked all the tranny fluid out but it prob isnt.
Well i am going snowboarding today and tomorrow i figure with the luck i am having that i should go and try to have some fun.

the whinning is a tranny issue not a clutch issue. The throw out Bearing if faulty can cause shifting problems like cant get into gear and/or slipping out of gear.
If you bought the car @ 105K and your at 135K now and have no idea about the clutch, it would be best to get the clutch replaced with a new one and that should solve the problem.
I recommend 5th clutch, havent heard a negative thing about it, only that people love it, and it grabs better than 4th gen oem.

Yeah, but i dont think the tranny would leak all fluid if i needed a clutch. Well if i need a new or rebuilt tranny i am prob going to get a flywheel and clutch since it is already apart.
Anyone know what could cause the transmission to not engage and leak the fluid?

I'd advise acting quickly think everything thru, but when I had discovered my tranny was leaking (which was 2 months after a new clutch install) the tranny leaked it fluid all into my brand new clutch which was soaking it up like a sponge causing slipping, so just a heads up.
it could leak from bad seals, bad bearing, worn down metal.
It could not engage due to low pressure in the line, throw out bearing, clutch grab point might need adjusting closer to the floor
some ideas

this is the same thing I went through with my '97. I had 85k on it. One evening the noise got considerably louder. The next thing I knew, I couldn't even get the stick into 1st or 2nd. I took it to the shop this week and it's gonna run me about $1300 for the rebuild. The more people I talk to on here, the more it seems like a problem with the 4th gens.
