Rear Main Seal--Replace it or NOT?

I will be replacing a clutch in my 99 SE very soon. A friend of mine told me to do the Rear Main Seal at the same time. Would you agree? What would be involved in replacing the seal? Has anybody done one? If I did both the clutch and the seal I am looking at a whole day? I am not a brain surgeon, but it looks like I will need to take off a lot to get to the clutch. Anybody that has done it, could share your experiences? Maybe links? Any INPUT would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU.

If it's not leaking, leave it alone!

It looks like it might be leaking. If it is not leaking than the trans is. I am not sure, that is why he probably told me to do it?

I think you have to drop the upper oil pan to change that seal. Which means removing the center cross bar and supporting the engine.

Change it!!!

Last time I did and tranny swap without replacing the rear main seal... it started leaking 6 weeks later.

Every time I pull a tranny I ALWAYS replace the rear main seal.

On the max the seal comes in a triangular housing, and you'll need to remove the lower and upper oil pans, so it'll take an hour or so.

Ok, thank you for the info. How long do you think the clutch will take?

I agree with Scruit.... You should change it, that way you have a fresh one in there. I did a tranny swap a while back and the rear main did look a little wet, and 5k miles later, it's now slowly dripping a few drops of oil a day. I hit myself for not changing it.

How to change the RMS:

The rear main seal I believe is just a few bolts away, that's after you remove the tranny, clutch, and flywheel. No need to drop the oil pan.
