Faulty alternators produce whining noise, or is it something else?

There's this whining noise which has begun approx. 2 days ago. It is most noticeable at or past 3k RPM. I notice it less during gear change, at which point the noise vanishes for a fraction of a second. I'm thinking it could either be my alternator or my belts.

Also, is there a way to test the alternator? As far as I know, there is not, which means that when an alternator dies, so does our battery because it will drain it? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?

Suggestions are welcome. THanks

Sounds like alternator. Have it checked for free at Advance Auto or Autozone.
