Tips on making the car start smoother?

Well, in my 98 max, when I turn the vehicle on, theres just like a half a second shaking, then it idles. I was wondering if theres any way to make it feel likemy 2000 max se, where when I turn it on, it'll do so smoothly. I don't really know how to word out what I'd saying, but that was a mediocre attempt.

Any tips?

plugs, fuel filter, pcv valve, clean your tb, clean your iacv, check maf connector, grease starter, ehh that should give you something to do this afternoon.

I know what you mean. It is kind of hard to explain it. I feel a difference in my mom's 2000 and my 1996.

I get the same feel to my 98 but it doesnt bother me much. Im putting in filled mounts and that should get rid of it along with my wheel hop.

I think it's has something to do with the starter. Seems like the starter tries too much in my 96. My 2000 just turns without a problem, very solid.

I regreased the starter per motorvate and that helped my starter alot ..work great (so far its only been two weeks) I used snowmobile grease that was rated for ice cold weather and hot extreme temps. My main concern was getting some lubrication during the cold cold days because the starter would not squeal when its above 50 degrees.

As far as the 1 seconds shake...that is NOT the starter, My 1996 maxima Se would shake quite a bit dip its rpms then catch itself all in a matter of 1-2 seconds tops.
Someone told me to clean the throttle body and I was like ..."yah whatever". When I pulled the stock box off I was suprised how much dirt and carbon where surrounding the butterfly. I cleaned it with a lint free rag and gasoline. I started the car later that day and was amazed how much smoother it started and idled!.
While having tires put on it my mechanic said "your car seems to be starting a lot better what did you do ?" I told him and he didnt believe me ...oh well Good Luck!

it's because the 2000+ has a different number of teeth, i believe 10 instead of the 95-99 which had 8 i think

so the 2000+ starter is actually better than the 4th gen and will also start the car quicker

nope, i haven't looked at my starter....i learned this from someone changing out thier starter, they replaced it and noticed that the 5th gen is very similar to the 4th; the only diff was the number of teeth each one had

so you can use a 5th gen starter and on a 4th and supposedly it'll start quicker/smoother

You can get both 8 and 10 teeth starters, 8 is the old generation so if you need a new one make sure it's has 10.
Back to snair2's problem, I just cleaned out my IAC valve for the forst time and did my throttle body cleaning for the 2nd time and wow what a difference, much smoother start, and idle. Try this first it costs nothing, well maybe a can of throttle body cleaner.
