please step in only if you have replaced steering rack yourself

I will be repalcing my rack here in next few weeks , and i am looking fo some hits from somebody who done it themself,

have few Q's : The repair manual calls for removing the steering wheel/airbag
as a first step,

" The sterring wheel must be removed before disconnecting the steering column lower joint to avoid damaging the SRS spiral cable"

I really don't want to mess with the SRS spiral cable, I was planning on disconnecting the lower joint from steering rack , bolting up the new rack and calling it a day.

it seems that repair manuals always call out unnecessary steps.

what is your opinion on this?

Nick.

There is a boot that covers the splined shaft on the rack that the steering shaft attaches to. Pull the boot up and loosen the pinch nut and it slides right off. It's just above the rack, on the outside of the vehicle. We never touched anything inside the car when we swapped the rack for an org member just 2 weeks ago.

Your approach is correct!

well that makes more sense now , dang Chilton's and Hayens manuals seem always to call for things that will make your 5 hour job into 10 hour one.
