5spd is about to go out
I'm having a very slight grinding noise in 1st and 2nd gear, also a very small transmission leak under the car, no puddles yet. My tranny has been making noise when I let out the clutch in nutral since I got it for the last 10K. The leak in the tranny scares me, I have no idea how long it will last, how long can I drive this car before the 5sp craps out? I am wondering what year Nissan fixed the bearing issue so I can look for a transmission from that year. Or should I just pay to have it rebuilt? Any input is appreciated.

have someone take a look at it.. could be that the gears arent getting enough fluid, so they're grinding...or it could very well be a bearing issue....i have an auto, but i'm tryin to larn up on 5spds as much as i can..doing the swap...

kindof sounds like mine, except i dont get a grinding noise...thats probably a warning sign that something is close to failing. i would think anyways.
i get a whining when im in 1st and a tiny bit in 2nd though, i think its just from someone riding the crap out of 1st gear before me owning the car...not the best way to slow down by using 1st gear...actualy its a realy bad way.
last night a was going realy hard on it and smelled something burned...think it was trani...kindof acrid smelling...what coiuld it be

maan I have a grinding sounds in first more than ever now but its a slipping clutch and its worrying me, so I'mg going 5th gen clutch/tranny in a month or so.
it could be a bearing issue but if you know your tranny is leaking I'd suggest getting it looked after as soon as possible, I saw i had a leak 3-4 weeks later when I went to get it fixed the tranny leak was getting all over my clutch and soaking into my brand new clutch. I need a new clutch also . . . not fun for my walet
check fluid level on the tranny, the bearing issue would whinne not grind.

if a bearing goes, and youre getting oil all over your clutch, is that why its slipping constantly?
i think i have a little bit untill i need a new trani...but i think i will need one sometime sooner or later. its getting more hard to put it into 1st gear sometimes doesnt want to go. other times its realy nice and easy. grrr

Yes, your clutch will soak up that oil and now you have a wet slipping clutch. I'm not sure how long it will take for the clutch to soak up the oil and slip but its a matter of time.
difficulty putting it into 1st gear is a sign of worn clutch/bad clutch. usually shifting to 2nd then to first always works. I'd suggest getting it looked after as soon as possible.

Got an estimate of about $1400 to rebuild. I put out a request at Carpart.com
for a used trans, but no luck with that just yet.
If I have this rebuilt should I urge the shop to use the same shim setup (.0456) on the motervate website??

^^^ If you on the original clutch from 9 years ago it could be time to change, as long as a clutch it treated right
I believe most 5 speed will have trouble getting into reverse sometimes no cause for alarm, but if it occurs on a daily basis that could be a sign of something.
