MPG question
Wassup people! Lately I was getting only 300 miles per full tank. Half a year ago when I bought my Max I was getting 370 per full tank. I checked for codes and didn't get any code.
Does anybody know if there are any hidden codes that affect MPG?

I get an average of around 300-320. I recently did the hacked airbox mod, and cleaned the throttle body, so as a result, the car feels smoother and more responsive. You'd think this would equal better MPG, but all it did was make me want to push the car harder, thereby actually reducing MPG

I did almost everything on that list, except spark plugs and fuel system.

300mpg would be phenomenal. I think you really mean 300 miles/tankful.

Whats the deal with all these people getting below 300miles per tank, and being ok with it? I'm getting about 280 per tank. I threw two codes--the infamous knock sensor, and evap. I assume many of you are throwing some sort of sensor code. You may want to check that out. Perhaps the poor mileage doesnt bother you. But I drive close to 100miles a day, and spend $10 per day on gas. Do the math. Now multiply that by 2months, and you'll shed a tear for me. For those who dont know 18.5g(tank capacity) X 21 or 28mpg(minimal or optimal fuel economy)=388.5 or 518miles per tank. If everything was functioning well, you would be within that range.
PS: Is our tank really 18.5 gallons? It seems more or less to be about 17.5gallons.

it depends what octane ur using too i think, so that's somethin like
18.5g(tank capacity) X 21 or 28mpg(minimal or optimal fuel economy)=388.5 or 518miles per tank @ 91,92,94 octane
i use 92 mostly unless i reaaly need gas from a Shell. ..then its 91.
92 seems to go way further and i get around 320mp/tank
does my engine light come on when i should check my ecu codes? or do i check them when something doesnt seem right?...both?
i have no light on, not burned out, should i still go check for codes if im getting 300+mp/tank?

knock sensor usually won't trip an ecu code, though it can rob you of gas mileage.
I got 420 miles on my last tank, with about 360 being highway cruising at 80-85MPH. Normally I fill up around 400 miles, with about an 1/8 of a tank left. Last time I checked, it was around 27mpg with mostly highway, some city, though I've hit 29.9mpg straight highway (at 88-90mph too!), hit 500 miles on that tank. And yes, my mileage has gone down noticeably during the winter monthes, though my knock sensor has been crying for about 6 months now too, its on the list of things to get fixed before it gets really bad.

You can remove the harness and check resistance between the electrodes. If you can get in there.
Or you remove the sensor and check the resistance that way

Over the last 3 fillups, I've been getting 23mpg avarage. My fuel light comes on about at about 350-370 miles. I drive 70 miles a day (35 miles each way to work) maybe more and I thought this was normal... I guess I'm getting pretty good gas mileage.

ive never gotten below 300miles/tank. even when my car was throwin the o2and knock sensor, i was getting 310. before winter i was getting 370/tank(23-24mpg), then during winter i was getting 320/tank(20-21mpg), and this last tank i got my 370 (last tank was 23.8mpg). maybe b/c of the colder weather, and i was driving it harder in the cold, that i got lower mpg in winter. either way, less than 280/tank means ur driving too hard or need to tune up.

Yea I get to about 270 when the needle hits Empty. I calculate it exactly every week and mostly its been around 18mpg, lowest was 15 and highest was 20 for the winter. This is all 100% city driving but it does get better in the summer, usally around 21mpg city.
On a sidenote to all the peeps from CT...on the news the other day they were saying gas prices will go up to $2.50 for 87 octane for the summer before coming down to normal again (which is still haniusly overpriced). Hmm...I love how the US is controling the middle-east right now and oil is so $$$

I can get 500 to 550 miles on a tank with straight highway driving - varies depending on elevation changes and speed of course (no faster than 75 mph on a sustained basis). I can get about 350 miles on a tank commuting in stop and go traffic, with lights and no faster than 40 mph - 11 miles each way. I really don't understand how anyone can get less than say 450 per tank on the highway and 300 when commuting unless you're driving 90 mph the whole time on the highway and booting it from every light in the city.
Either quit driving like you stole the car or don't biatch about it anymore because I think in many instances its the drivers fault to some extent and not the fault of the car.

All I can say is with 105k miles of experience with a 1998 Max SE 5-spd, my car delivers a solid 28 mpg highway, and around 20-21 city/hwy combined. The only thing the car ever got was a 60k service and cleaned K&N. If you get anything less, your car is in poor working condition. That's the fact, Jack. And we all don't have 18.5 gallon tanks, it changes based on the day of the week and whether it is an odd or even year.

I hate these mpg threads.
I guarantee none of you run your gas tank until you're sputtering fumes and stalling, so dividing the miles on your tripometer since the last fill-up by 18.5 is idiocy.
check how many gallons you put in when you fill up next time. it won't be 18.5, trust me. I've never been able to get more than just over 17 gallons in my tank, even when I run it down to the idiot light.
I got 340 miles on my last fill. the needle was down to E, I fit 16.5 gallons in the tank until the pump cut me off. that's just over 20.5mpg. I live on long island, so it's about 60/40 city/highway for me. your mpg should be slightly better than mine; I have a heavy foot.

rofl auto hit at least 100 everytime i hit highway, i know im CRAZY! get about 18mpg at lowest 15.5 which long time racing and my friend lost his RSX I think we have a 16 gallon tank, but i never put more than 14.5 for i never let it go low. Ya i work at a gas station and we just when up to $2.37 for 93 man o man good thing i filled up right before!

I mostly do two lane highway driving (roads where speed limit is about 55) I usually go about 60 and I usually get anywhere from 390-408 on a full tank, that's usually with 89 octane (I know its a sin, I get 93 mixed in usually but have repented and will stick with no less than 91) With a full tank of 93 octane I'll get no less than 420 miles to a full tank, I have a cold air intake and run fuel injector cleaner every now and then.

i usually fill up around 1/8 tank and very rarely is that over 300... i calculate it while im sitting in the car before i leave and i average between 18-20mpg usually... also guilty of a heavy foot. replaced ks and o2 sensors last summer so theyre not a problem i know that. i thought i would see the mileage go up a little bit once in a while considering ive been driving 20mph in the snow lately but i find a way to keep it down

Wait a minute people. Who the hell said we had a 18.5gallon tank? Before you flame, I suggest you re-read what I wrote. At least 2 people made a comment about this, rather than just answer my question. Idiocy? I used 18.5gallon as a unit of measurement, because thats what the books say. At least I stated unit I was using, rather than just throw miles per tank onto the screen. Why would I ask about the tank capacity if I was so convinced it was 18.5g? Its so quick to flame but when it gets down to offering valid comments that actually contribute to helping others, well, suddenly people have nothing to say. I also have driven the max until it ran out of gas. It never fully ran out, but it did begin sputtering and hesitating as I drove into a gas station. The last time I did this was last sunday. Before anyone else begins flaming for driving a car to that point, pay careful attention to what I'm about to say next. It was to test and obtain data. About a tuneup, I did a complete tuneup 3days after I purchased the car, in the cold I might add. I clean the fuel system regularly! The Injectors will be pulled out and cleaned as soon as it gets warm. About not knowing how to calculate mpg nonsense someone wrote, I do infact know how the proper method of calculating mpg. I chose the method I used because I'm not half-assed about it. I fill her all the way up, and dont refil until she stalls. So I'm guessing thats pretty acurate. Is there an easier way to do this? Damn right there is. The easier method is used because people arent expected to drive until their car stalls. Simple as that. Save your flames for a rookie. Just because I just joined the site does not mean I started driving yesterday.

I was reading some tire reviews on tirerack.com that complained that Turanza tires will reduce fuel economy by 20%. I'm on my second set of Turanzas. I also know that I only get about 20mpg based on 50/50 driving and I don't think it's ever gotten the 21 city or whatever the sticker said. So, for all of you with great gas mileage, what tires do you have? It could also be the crappy California gas.
