Low Fuel Light - When does it come on?

I just recently got my 97 SE, and really wonder if the low fuel light works.

I drove recently on a highway trip 445 miles, the red line was PAST the "E", and when I went to fillup, it took 16.7 gallons to fill the 18.5 tank...

...yet the low fuel light never came on? How can I verify that it is indeed working, short of running out of gas? When does your light come on?

Should be when you have 1 gallon left. That's how it's been in past cars i've had. I don't know for sure in the max.

2-2.5, hence from your observation. I can confirm this in both my Maximas, 95 and 03

it comes on way past the E in mine. I believe you have about a gallon or 20 some miles when it comes on and stays on.

Bottom line, keep it above 1/4 and you should be okay ...

I have driven the car down past when the light comes on a few times, but not recently. In equating litres back to US gallons (I live in British Columbia), I believe the light should come on right about where you filled up, possibly slightly after. I think there is about 7.0 litres left when the light comes on constantly on a level road. That equates to 1.85 US gallons, bringing your refill to: 18.5 - 1.85 = 16.65 US gallons. You put in 16.7 gallons.

If you really want to find out try bringing it down a little past where you filled up during this "experiment". The bottom line is you still had gas left as you can drive on E or below for quite some time on the highway. Don't run out of gas as it doesn't do much for your fuel injectors. However, I must admit I ran out of gas once and had no problems with the engine.
