bad rack and pinion might have few different symptoms, to name few:
- noise while turning the wheels
-vibrations and shimmy in the steering wheel
- over all "loose" feeling in the steering wheel
- check for any leaks, torn boots , loose inner and outer tie rods,

bad and torn strut mounts will give you clunking noise while going over bumps

as the matter of fact - while installing my front springs on Tokico struts I've managed to destroy one of the strut mounts , I used impact wreanch to tighten the strut nut and the rubber inside the mount separated from the mount , dang I have to order new one online,

I'm pretty sure others might add to that list
