!Help! with Timing Chain Tensioner please...

ok guys...for the last few weeks ive been hearing this rattle from my engine(800-2000rpm, driving and parked)....after reading through some of the posts I have determined(or so I think so) that this rattle is the timing chain tensioner.....now I am familiar with basic engine stuff but am clueless to timing chains and tensioners...only thing the sticky says is "how to fix" which I dont think I can do myself

can someone explain what exactly the timing chain tenstioner is/does?....how long can I let this problem go?...can it cause serious damage if not fixed soon!?...is it costly(100-200$?)-im not one for dealers, maybe I should take it there for THIS problem??...how long does this repair typically take?...any help would be greatly appreciated..thanks!

Rick

I've had this rattle for a year now..it usually happens when the engine is cold.
Don't worry too much about it, since it dosn't damage your engine, but I do admit, it is a little annoying.

Hi,
My timing chain tensioner was donig the same thing a few months ago.

I was out of the area for 3months, came back and started my car to hear that ticking sound. At first I jsut thought it was oil had to run through it again because it was sitting for so long.

After a few days it was still there, I changed my oil and filter put some oil stuff in there (can't remember what its called but it helps clean the engine) and everything was fine after that. The dealer wanted to charge me 2grand to replace that.

Change your oil, use Nissans oil filter and see what happens.

Good luck.

I usually here it at start up it sounds like its rattling then grabs and all is fine, only when its cold. When I was at the dealer I asked them how much the job was to replace the tensioner and they giggles and said about $1600, I laughed too and said I can do it myself.

I've never heard of a timing chain issue causing bad performance problems with the car only a rattle at start up, maybe do some investigating and make sure nothing else is in need of replacing.
