Just go for some nice rubber on your stock wheels, go for 225/50/16.. as compared to stock 215/55/16 they are a bit wider, and lower profile.. better for cornering, put more tire to the surface plus less roll with the low profile... I have a set of 16" fairly lightweight rims, w/ 225/50/16 Sumitomo's, I can take turns at rollercoaster speeds, and that's with stock suspension and broken lower arm bushings. This will cost you a lot less then buying new rims, and definately have that sleeper look since u won't stand out looking like any regular 97-99 SE max. 17" rims are more for looks, performance wise they may actually be worse, 17" rims are generally heavier then stock.. unless they are super lightweight, which means they will cost a pretty penny, plus 17's will give u an aftermarket look.

Get some Borbet type E's
to keep the stock look. They are 5 spoke and only slightly different. I put some 17 inch borbet type E's with 235/45-17 potenza's and everyone at work said "......now what did you to your car...it looks the same" .I can tell quite a bit and I love them, but to the average joe it only looks ever so slightly different. And talk about the performance upgrade. It sticks like crazy -cloverleafs, exits ramps at 85+ -no problem. 90 degree turns at 45 mph will amaze you. It just stays planted but still retains the sleeper look. Drawback $800 for wheels. But considering you 'll drive 100,000+ on them, that cost is significanlty less than gas or oil or any other expense and you'll enhance your car immensely.
Alternative -do what the other guy said and put 225/55-16 rubber on the stock 5 spoke. -slightly cheaper and sticks well with the right rubber.

If u wanna stay the budget low, just forget to get new rims. The tires i've just got r Kumho ECSTA Supra 712. They r ultra high performace. the stock size of maxima should be 215/55R16. You can go for the stock size or 225/55R16. 225/50R16 is ok 2, but with thinner tires, ur mileage will rise faster than usual and it looks ugly with stock suspension 'coz the gap between the tires and the fenders will be very large (it's quite large already when the car is stock).
And the price of this tire is the lowest in its class.
u can take a look here.

Pirellis
I have a new set of Pirelli P6000 225/55/16 on Enkei RT-01 16x7.5. They are SO much better than stock 15's with Coopers i had. If you already have the 16's get these tires. I got mine on a great deal off ebay from a dealer with surplus for 354 shipped for all 4. If you can't find them there go to tirerack and get some but go to 50 aspect, all they had on ebay was 225/55 but hey they are AWESOME, once i'm lowered watch out Integras.
