Best clutch for '97 SE?
Best clutch for '97 SE?
First, I know there's no such thing as a "best" clutch, I just wanted a catchy title.
Essentially, I need a new clutch ('97 SE, 93k miles), and don't know what to get. Money is kinda tight, so if OEM is the cheapest, I know it works and would probably go with it.
But then again, I don't know anything about some of the aftermarket clutches- do they all require new flywheels? Similar in price? I want something that will drive smoothly, like stock, and last for quite awhile.
Does anyone have any thread links on this forum, or anywhere else for that matter, relating to clutches?
And, finally, if you know anyone in the Seattle area, anywhere I should get it replaced??
Thanks!!!

check the regional section and as there for a local shop that can do the work.
if oyu want a clutch that will last a long time and is cheap, just go OEM. if you are just doing basic N/A mods, there is NO reason to get an aftermarket clutch, the OEM will hold just fine. it grips very well and will last over 100k miles if you treat it right. go here; www.jerryromenissan.com to order an OEM clutch set. go for a 5th gen clutch assembly (preassure plate and disc). that is the setup that im using, and so are a few other people on here. its a few bucks cheaper than the 4th gen setup but grips harder cus its bigger, and will last just as long.

I'll call those guys tomorrow- thanks for the link. Can't find any real parts off that site... Anyone else have input?
So with the 5th gen clutch, why doesn't everyone use it? Is it just the pressure plate that is different, or is the whole thing (disc and all) a new variety?
Finally, any preferred way to resurface the flywheel? I know with my 3000GT it has to be 'two stepped' or it will crack...
Thanks!

the PP and disc from the 5th gen are bigger so you get more surface area and more clamp force. my friend orderd my parts for me, but PM Jsutter, he knows the part numbers that you will need.
as for the flywheel, i also dont know, my friend just sent it to his flywheel guy and had it resurfaced.

Go to the stealership (or online some place) and get the OEM 2000 clutch.
Here is the clutch parts again but with prices
clutch disc 30100-40U14 $65.59 (list $96.79) <--- 4th gen
Throwout bearing 30502-41U20 $25.22 (list $42.14) <---- 4th gen
clutch cover (pressure plate) 30210-89F00 $109.41 (list $129.10) <---- 5th gen
I got a quote from Courtesy Nissan in TX and brought the prices to my local Nissan dealer. They sold me the parts no problem at the lower price.
the 2000 disc works too, but i dont have the part number.

Thanks for the part list- I've ordered from that Courtesy dealership before, so I'll give them a call for a quote.

I'm also another person using the 5th. gen clutch setup, and have to say it is smooth, and very linear when it's engaging. The parts aren't "that" much cheaper - a few duckets here and there, but it's the fact that it is a BETTER clutch than the 4th gen. OEM setup that lures people like myself into this. I literally got all the parts Clutch cover/pressure plate, throwout bearing, and clutch disk for JUST over $200 tax included. I too quoted Jerry Rome's Prices, and my local dealership gave me the prices. Labor's a b...h, expect around $500. As for almost any OEM replacement parts, there are great quality. STAY AWAY from parts that say "key value", there have been stories of clutches slipping after 6000 miles.
I forgot to address the flywheel question - there is no need for a "bigger" flywheel, the 4th gen. fits fine. Also, unless your flywheel was damaged beyond repair (remilling, etc.), there is no need to replace it at all. You will however pay like $50 for the remilling process (it will most likely be added onto your mechanic's bill, as he will take care of it.).
Good luck, I definately recomend this setup.
Also, I went with ALL 2000+ Maxima clutch parts - the TO bearing, PP/CC, and disk.

the 5th gen setup feels just the same as the 4th gen under normal driving, but will grip harder.
i got all my parts for $200 exactly, then labor was $250 including flywheel remill.
