Horrible gas mileage!

Hey guys,
Just last week, I had reset my trip odometer when I had filled up my gas tank - and its been about a week and now the needle for the gas tank is past the last line before empty. Topping that off, I have only gotten 245 miles this whole tank! Supposidly on edmunds.com the '98 maxima can get as much as 380 city and 520 for the highway. What's happenign guys?!? Is my knock sensor out? I drive mostly on "small" highways as well so the city isn't really a problem. I was thinking I should be getting at least in the mid 300's. Someone pls. let me know getting kinda upset especially with these prices.

*I've got a 2k2 and a 2k maxima and it seems that I've got to fill this car up about the same time as the others, when this car is supposed to get better miles.

Sorry about the venting, but I need to find the culprit.

I have no SES light on

Thanks in advance guys

thats horrible.. i got 225 right now and just hit half a tank. I know thats not a good measure of gas mileage but around 200-230 is what im usually at with a half a tank. You might want to do a tune up, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, tranny fluid, oil change, and also check your tire pressure, raise them up and you'll notice better gas mileage, also a bumpier ride. Mine are at 40psi all around right now and ill probably go up to like 42-44 soon.

I got 350 on a tank. That is both highway and around atl. Plenty of boosting done on that tank as well. Normal driving I shift at 2k for each gear. Check your fuel filter. Do you ever floor your max or take it up over a hundred? Im a firm believer in cleaning out the system. If you dont things can get clogged up. My max gets up to atleast a 100mph each day. No problems .

I get up to 375-400 when its highway driving, and I try to open the car up every day too. I have to take the highway for 10-15 mins a day to and from work, so I am always opening the car up to about 90-100 for few seconds. If it's mostly city driving, I can go anywehre from 275 to 325 depending on how much stopping and going I am doing. There are plenty of threads on here regarding the same thing: ks, o2 sensor, fuel filter, plugs, just spend some time looking into and make a decision on what you think may be causing you issues on your gas mileage.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the quick replys. Actually about 4 months ago, I had gotten all my 02 sensors replaced; and topping that off I get my oil changed every 3k religiously. My tires are at 29 psi all around which might be too low? Should i put it up higher to about 34? Also, Im thinking it might be my KS?

Thanks again guyz.

Very well could be your ks. You should check your ECU and see if you have the ghost code for the KS. Thats a pretty sure way to find out. That's what I ended up doing, and how I found out that I needed to replace mine.

Why does this stupid argument get brought up every day.

Mileage depends on so many things that someone in Kansas cant say that someone in New York's mileage sucks and scare the person into thinking there is a problem.

Any post with mileage should be banned

I'm getting about 250 without flooring it at all, driving pretty conservatively, a fairly even mix of city (NY so that's extreme city) and highway driving. I should mention that my car has 101K miles and I haven't tuned it up, so I know I could be getting more. I'm using 93 octane gas, with 25 lb 17" rims.

Gonna check my tire pressure tomorrow, and also see if I get the KS code.
