Ugly Tan Interior Now Partly Black

Hello, I just wanted to show you guys what I've been up to, even if you don't care. I hated my tan interior when I got my Maxima. But, maybe mostly because there was/is gooby and gashes all over the door panels. So I decided to paint and reupholster them. I only reupholstered one door panel just to see how it would come out. All this cost under $25 bucks. Tell me what you guys think. And also, what is the best cleaning agent to clean the door panels with?

BEFORE

AFTER

FRONT DOORS Front doors and rear door cloth change soon to come...

Excuse the dirtyness.

That looks awesome. How hard was it to do the whole thing. I might have to try it.

Thanks for the nice words. It wasn't that hard to do the whole thing, just took a while. The door cloth inserts were the hardest because I actually had to glue the vynal to the door and tuck it into the crack. Painting is pretty easy though. I'll be doing the front door soon. Hey erty67 nice siggies...

Looks good, it breaks up the mono-tone door panels well.

I always loved your interior, since the first time you started some of the black. Great job on the upholstering! After what erty said, then it's time to get the black dash and center console!!

Uh, you still have tan doors with gashes. I don't see how you fixed your problem.

The black takes my eye away from them. HAHAHA I'll need to get some gash filler and clean them. What's good stuff to clean the door panels with?

Max Mutes - your the one who told me to change the door insert cloth to black.

Black, what is envolved in removing the upper inserts? I have that fake leather right now and if it is easy enough to remove them, I was going to have redlinegoods redo them in real leather.

ptatohed - On mine I took a screw driver and stuck it between the insert and the door panel. That way I could get part of the insert loose and pull the rest of it off. It was just glued and tucked onto the door panel. I heard that some are screwed into the door panel also. I had to cut the new vynal piece the correct size by tucking it in the crack and marked where to cut it. Then glue it right on there.

Conrad283 - HAHA just kidding...

I don't think he took them off. He mentioned tucking in the vinyl. I believe they just clip in on the backside of the door panel. You should be able to take them off the panel with the panel removed form the door.

Not on mine...and when I found that out I was mad. I had to tuck it into the space around the insert.

EDIT: I'm sorry Erty. Nice sigs by the way...

i think on the GXE's the dorr panel insert is glued or permanently attached to the door panel. On the SE/GLE/I30 it can be romoved and is held in by clips on the back

Conrad, could you pleeeeeease swap the line "18 x 8 HP EVO..." with the line "H&R/KYB AGX...." in your sig? It is driving me nuts. It is so close to being a perfect "slope" - if it just weren't for those two lines.

Just giving a little update on what I did:

I also hit up the door panels with some Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. I would recommend them to get the dirt out of the tan interior panels.

i like it except for the door pockets on the front. i might have to do mine that way. i just don't know whether i'd go for a gloss black like you or a semi-flat to match the dash and console.

i have the tan interior and i've swapped the center console and dash to black by the way. no more shit brown.

IMO, I think what he did is better and smarter. Now if/when he gets the I30 Chrome Handles, he can also get some Chrome inserts and throw them on the bottom of the door and still have a corresponding black piece on the bottom.

I went all out, I didn't even know I was going to do that many pieces. I still need to get the trunk button out and paint that.

How much are they? HEHE

I used Duplicolor Paint For Plastics. Didn't use a primer, but did use a clear coat. Once this black dried it was pretty flat. Once I put a clear coat on the pieces they shined. I just used a Clear Enamel for the clear coat. I'll work on a little write up for you guys soon.

Yes, I would rather have mine a little duller looking. It doesn't quite match the center console parts. It looks good though. I want to swap out some tan stuff for black too.

That looks pretty good except the door pockets as already mentioned. I've been thinking about doing something similar only using parts from a black maxima interior rather than painting...thinking of doing air vents too. You have helped me visualize it better though...thanks.

As far as cleaning get a mister clean magic eraser...I think you may have already found this out in the detailing forum (unless that was someone else with a similar name), but as I said there I am very impressed with this product in how easily it achieves the same results as scrubbing and a vinyl cleaner.

That's the Poo-Poo Brown interior for ya.

I want to do my air vents, but that is another time. I love the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It does work very well. I got scuff marks off every plastic piece inside my car. I even used it in my mom's Maxima.

Hmm...so when you DO get the Black Dash, what do you plan on doing for the trim pieces? I was thinking get the stock Black Trim and either do them the same shiny black you did the door accents with OR do the trim the same color Beige as the rest of the interior...

Kind of hard to see if it might look a little cheesy up close and personal, but I really like the contrast. Looks cool. Nice idea.
