I presently have a Shopvac OSCAI off the snorkel resonator hole + a K&N filter. The sound is a BIT better than stock, but nothing like taking the snorkel off. Would there be much power and/or sound difference between what I have now and taking the snorkel off and fitting my OSCAI tube to the square intake on the airbox? Would that be any better/worse than doing the hacked airbox?

I used a 2.5" diameter rigid shopvac wand extension plus a 6" wide end dealie that just peeks below the back of the front skid plate. I think it looks good, much better than some of those big intakes I've seen in pictures that look like they'd rip off at the first speed bump. I have pics if anyone's interested. Cost me a whole $15 or so at Lowes.

I like the sound of my hacked air box but it barely makes more noise than the "bees in a can" sound from my y-pipe. When people ride in my car for the first time they always say, "This thing sound pretty good, but do you have an exhaust leak or what?"

What kind of y-pipe do you have. Is it old or did it sound like that while new? I thought that y-pipes weren't supposed to be noticeably louder except at wot.

get a frankencar intake i have driven maxis with stillen, injen, place racing, hacked air box and honestly the frankencar intake with apex'i air filter has been the best for sound and gain summer or winter i love it its a little pricey but it was the best setup i tested and i have it in my max i may make a snorkel and see what its like to run it i also still have that air ram intake that comes stock on the car (u know the cold air scoop from the front of the hood) on there and it seems to help i recommend frankencar for life

Gain is around 2hp's! There's a dyno floating somewhere in the org proving this. If you can feel 2hp's, then more power to you! Any intake mods alone won't give you much, if any. Combine intake with Y-pipe, and you'll see something significant. This is all in the stickies guys.......just read them! This is turning into another useless intake thread.

And yes some have insulated their intakes! Everything you can think of has been done, just search for it in the forum.

I just did it tonight. I had picked up a complete upper and lower airbox, with MAF, IAT, resonator box and the rubber intake boot for $19.50 on Ebay. It was from a 1996 Maxima. I don't think you can beat that price!. I installed the entire assembly after drilling five 1-1/2" holes in the airbox. Three were drilled on the angled portion of the lower airbox and two were drilled right behind the battery. Man it sounds good. I don't notice much improvement in performance - but at least it sounds a bit more sporty now! I first started drilling air boxes on the 94-96 Chevrolet Caprice Police Package cars with LT1s. It did make a difference in those cars performance wise and made the intake sound great.

The best thing is - I kept all of my stock intake parts and can revert back to stock in 10 minutes.

I love those Caprices, they are real sleepers. Almost bought one instead of the Max.

Does the Hacked air box really "bog down" performance during warmer weather?
