I want to upgrade my exhaust system, but I am not quite sure of what to do. Should I just change out my muffler with a performance part? I am kind of new at this.

all and any help will be appreciated.

you can just but the muffler but it wont increase much, only you will get a nice sound and a little better top end power. if you have the money then but the full cat-back which comes with the all the pipes which will make it have a better flow and more power

Its quit simple. You can only get a muffler or a full cat-back exhaust system. Cat-back is from the Catalyctic converter to the muffler. I have an apexi ws exhaust and it doesnt have a nice tone to it, if you don't run a straight pipe. I am about to change it and get an HKS muffler, i heard it lat night on a max and it sounds sweet.basically these are the people that make good exhaust systems:
Stillen
HKS
Greddy
Apexi
Those are the four i think make the best exhaust sytem for the maxima, so do your research and see which one fits what you are looking for.

If you want to go all out you can get a Y-pipe, racing cat, and a catback exhaust system.

thanks for the complement gtr_rider. Well what exactly are you looking for? louder meaner sound? Nice looks? or performance? to get all three then get a full cat back. for sound then get just the muffler from any of the companies that ybelm620 mentioned. for looks well, the cheapest to do is get a ricer tip to bolt on.

thanks for all yoyr help

I just want the looks and some more ponies under the hood, I don't really care the sound. But of course, the deeper the sound the better.

any suggestions?

I'm leaving my muffler stock

I just bought the courtesy b-pipe from Thomas and a 2-piece Stillen y-pipe at Stillen for under $260 total. They had a Stillen muffler for $100, but I think with the y-pipe and b-pipe, it just be too noisy. Anyway, I'm hoping for a 20 HP gain for $260 while still keeping the car a tad quiet. I'm thinking about changing out my muffler with the 2000 maxima muffler to improve low, mid, and top end power, but it has no been comfirmed that I'll get gains from it yet.

Why don't you spend your money on a y-pipe instead? That will give you the sound you want, plus the power to boot. Although, if you going to change out the WS exhaust, are you going to sell it? I would be interested.

I think the y-pipe would be the best thing for you to get as well, in terms of perfomrance and sound.

If you want some exhaust sound, you can always disconnect the muffler.... and either run it without the muffler or have a muffler shop create a straight pipe that bolts on in place of the muffler. The muffler is bolted to the b pipe with two bolts. Simply unbolt the two bolts and slide the three rubber hangers off the muffler. This will probably perform better than any other bolt on muffler.

The max has a resonater up stream (if you don't have a b-pipe) which acts like a pre-muffler...

It sounds pretty mean and deep to me!

Wouldn't you lose backpressure

as well as losing low end power. I think the y-pipe should definately be the first thing aside from the intake.

I'm also wanting to mod my exhaust a bit. I know you should start with he intake--but what do you guys recommend? Stillen? They're so pricey.

thanks!

I need a B-Pipe for an Apexi N1 muffler. Do you know where I can get a cheap one?? Also, I haven't gotten the Apex yet, planning on today, if you have a good deal on a muffler too i'll take it!

Back (back in '96/97) when I removed the muffler (and air filter, while keeping the airbox in place, with no air filtration) while I was at the Sacramento Speedway in my '96 GXE auto, I did notice torque loss. This was particularly noticed with less wheel spin at launch, and I couldn't really feel much gain from the butt dyno on the top end. It made the run much less dramatic.

However, on my '97 SE 5sp, it SEEMS to be faster. Is it because of the noise? Don't know. But since I can normalliy get gobs of wheelspin on launch, this helps lessen the spin, and help out top where the Max begins to gasp.

The Max has a resonator in the b-pipe section, which is kinda acts like a muffler, shaping exhaust pulses in a way that can be canceled out better by the muffler I guess. Having no muffler versus a straight-through muffler doesn't exactly give you any less backpressure.

Besides, if you unbolt the muffler, and don't like it, you can put it back in. The only thing you've invested is 60 minutes at tops. And that includes the time taking it out and putting it back in!!! (two bolts on the flange, and then slip the muffler off of the three rubber hangers).

btw, i was worried hot exhaust gasses affecting the vehicle in some way. however, where the flange unbolts leave the outlet pointing downards towards the ground, so I don't think it'll hurt anything.

my 2 cents...

Hmm... I've got a question. If you install a y-pipe, which portion does it replace? and if u get a y pipe, does it mean that u don't need the full cat-back exhaust with all that piping??? thx.

Y-Pipe is Pre-Cat, which means its from the headers, into your cat. Thats what you replace. The "cat-back" is just what it means, the converter back. In all cases or maybe most, you keep your stock cat! Cat back is everything after it till the muffler including the B-PIpe and the Muffler, and Y-pipe is whats before! its also called a down pipe i believe!

Most aftermarket mufflers are universal so it will fit. I don't believe they offer a catback but you can just get the muffler.
