Transmission FLUSH, Automatic

It's 82K and I feel like I need to have the transmission flush. I called 2 places, one said $89.99 while the other said $149.99.

Why are they so much different? what do they typically do beside FLUSh the fluid out?

Just called couple more places and they are not sure if it takes the Regular Dexton III or Synthetic fluid. That's why there is a big gap in price.

So, which one did you guy use? Come on, i know many people done this already.

Thanks,

aamco uses dextron III. go with a service rather than a complete flush.

btw does anyone know how many quarts of ATF is needed for a service ?

how many miles do you have on your max? you may not need to have a complete flush. the magnets in the pan are not dirty if you have low mileage. you can simply drain and fill. it's cheap and easy. drain and fill is also fine, if your tranny was well maintained.

It's 82K and this is the first time I'll be doing anything to its transmission. Most of those miles are from city driving.

Call the Dealer and they charge $99.95 using Dexton III. They Flush the old fluid out, fill up with "Chemicals", let it stays there for a while then flush it all out, then refill with the new fluid. For $10 bucks more I think I'll go to the dealer, it sound like they will do a better job than those QuikLubs.

My local mechanic told me that my '99 needs synthetic. I forget how much I paid but I'll get back to you on the price once I get back home and look at the receipt.

If you're going to be doing work on your transmission, don't cheap out and get a service. Do the complete flush and re-fill or don't do it at all.

you want the best auto trans flush...i do them all the time at work and it is no gimmick. its called a B.G. Transmission service. it cleans and flushes the entire system. i do it to all my relatives cars and they never had a trans problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think most people would consider that a good thing, unless you HAVE to rev it that high for it to change..

Yeah, that's normal. I don't think the ECU allows you to get into the redline zones, unless you get it modded.

actually this is true...if you have a ton of miles on your trans dont flush it. the dirt deposits can actually act like a 'shim' to the seals and parts in there. new trans fluid has detergents in it and cleans these deposits causing trans failure. if you do it like every 30k or at least every 50k-75k your tranny will be happy for a long time!

I went to autozone lookin at oils while i bought a box of mobil 1, and the have mobil synthetic. I changed my trans pan a while ago, and filled it up till the line was at the hot spot. dont remember how many quarts. but it still has hard shifts, should i take it to NIssan and have them flush it with synthetic or Nissan D-matic.? Plus i got 84K miles but...........my trans had 82K when i changed the trans pan.

This is exactly why you should flush it. People always say this because they learn that after they do the flush that they need a new tranny because of all the deposits in there, so they just blame it on the flush. Well the fact is you needed a new tranny anyways with all those deposits in there, just that your problem was being hidden by dirt. Tranny fluid, regardless of mileage needs to be changed. Same thing with people saying not to switch to synthetic oil on high mileage engines because it dissolves the sludge seals from dino oil. The synthetic oil isnt creating problems, its finding problems that were already there.

So instead of cashing out the money for the flush (~$100), and having to replace the transmission (~!!!$), why not just let the filthy transmission last longer, die on it's own, and save the money from the flush?

only if its filthy dirty. if you have never changed it in like 100,000k. if not then a flush wont hurt.

ok, i'm gonna gout out on a limb here.

I've got 158k miles on my car. I NEVER did a full tranny flush, the only thing i did once was use vacume pump and pumped it out and refilled it with new fluid. Car has NEVER has a problem with the tranny. I feel that tranny flushes could do more harm then good if they are not done properly.

Yup and yup. Do mine every third oil change. Just drop the ATF into a bucket to measure the exact amount out (I have marked a white bucket with quart lines for this) and replace. Use what the manual recommends *or*, as I have done, keep replacing with synthetic (Mobil 1). Eventually you'll get it all switched over to synthetic and there's no pressure involved to hose your seals - simple gravity does the job.

Started this @ 34K miles when I bought the Max and now have 111K miles and have had no problems.

I was told that the job can be a DIY at home. But it is recommended to pay the extra $$ to have it done properly by a machine that FULLY cleans out the system.

I would pay and get the flush done properly, but I don't have to worry about that with my 5-speed - just drain and fill and it was recently done for peanuts.

Just let Nissan do it.(one of the few things I let the stealership do.) It's $139 by me. They use the Nissan D-Matic which is what is recommended, and flush it properly.

If they charged $200, I'd reconsider.
