wrong trani bolt, spring came out no tension in gears
a buddy and i wer changing the trani fluid today...im getting sick of people telling me that you should never have to change it...coz this stuff was SLUDGE. i bought redlinemt90..
so me and him argued about which bolt the drain plug was and finaly then, just took off the one that i decided. it was the lower ,outter, front most bolt on the trani, on the corner of the housing...anyways it must have been the wrong one because along with the sludge coming a SPRING also came out too! right out of the blots hole...
i almost **** myself
the bolt had some type of locktite stuff on it i think because it came loose, but then to put it back in, it kept turning like it was stripped...thats when i realy got worried. i know i couldnt have stripped anything though
so with everythihng back together [i shoved the spring back into the bolts hole] and put the bolt back in as good as i could...it wouldnt go TIGHT though.
btw i couldnt find anything on changing the trani fluids anywhere, i tried motorvate and the stickeys here and the stickeys link was broken.
thanks for help, what did i do??
that spring must have been some pice of a tension system in there because now my 1st and 2nd gear are REALY loose, they nearly fall out of gear. and 3rd 4th 5th and R, are all normal. it actualy drives okay, but its like butter putting it into 1st or 2nd. my trani also has a pretty good leak now i guess because this gear oil is more thin than the stuff i drained out... ugh

- the sticky for changing tranny fluid is in the fluids forum.
- iirc the drain bolt is directly on the bottom of the tranny.
- your leak is probably due to that loose bolt, not the fluid. if it's stripped, go to nissan and buy a new one. or home depot, if it's just a little cheap bolt and nothing important; i'm not sure which bolt you mean.
- i can't say for sure what that spring is, but remember that some of the improved shifter feel is the result of the new fluid-- although the VERY loose gears are usually a BAD sign, not a good one. if it drives fine and continues to do so, it's probably not a big deal, although i'm not sure i would want some mysterious spring floating around my tranny.

That is the detent (detant sp?) spring. There should have been a small meal ball that came out with the spring. It is the mechanism that keeps the shifter in gear. It needs to be in there. The ball is really small and you may have not seen it come out. Either way it needs to go back in.
I would find out for sure where the tranny fluid is leaking from. Should be obvious if you clean up the old fluid and watch for the new fluid to appear.
Oh, and go buy a haynes manual. Alot of the how to's in the stickies come right fromt that.

we have the oil sitting there still i can go get the metal ball..i guess it goes in before the spring?
the leak isnt coming from the bolt its coming from the middle rear of the gear houseing. along where the gasket runs, i guess thats the problem?
the bolt seems fine but the thing is that there was sealant holding the bolt in and i cracked the sealant by taking it out, so it just fits snug in there now but not threaded right in.
i was just worried about the spring coming out and now there bieng a ton of slack in the gear feel. my buddy, right away, said i did something to my linkage..neither of us knows what were talking about..
man is redline too expensive to be leaking out right away...

same exact thing happened to me a month or so ago. anyway the little ball does go in before the spring and just tighten the bolt, as for the locktite that might have been on the bolt, lokctite doesnt make it fit tighter just makes it hard to break loose, so you should be okay putting it back in how it is now. as far as the sealant though mine had a little too and i didnt put anything back on and it is doing good still.
definitely get a haynes manual if you can. also the factory repair manual is really good.
