Speedo Problem

My speedometer a few days ago started acting up, i was probably driving about 100km/h and my speedo said i was going 60km/h, but i wasn't even steady it was bouncing up and down...and then it just started going to zero, but only on high speeds it will jump to 20km/h and it still bouncing up and down...does any one know what i can do, or what the problem could be?? help please

Ibrahim

It often times is the speedometer head going bad. Vehicle speed sensor is also a possibility. I had to replace the speddometer heads on my 3rd gen. and my 4th gen.

I had a similar problem occuring not too long ago, although I got a code 0104 (speed sensor). I replaced the speed sensor, reset the ECU, and the error code came back. Apparently, a lot of people had successful stories of removing their cluster, cleaning/dusting out the parts, and re-tightening everything back into place. I decided to try that, and what do you know? It never happened again. Before changing out anything, that's what I would do. It takes about 5-10 minutes, and it's free. If it doesn't help, change the speed sensor (~$25), if that doesn't do it either, I would then change out the speedometer head and/or entire cluster. You can find instructions on how to remove the gauge cluster here:

Hope this helps, good luck!

Is the odometer working when the speedo stops? if not it could be your speed sensor....if your speed sensor goes out it should give you a code though.

Any update on this? My speedo and Odo are not working either. But this is after a 5Spd swap.

Thanks. I figured it out just after posting this last night. The dummies at the yard sent me a tranny without any speed sensor. I'm going to try to use the auto one.
