Does your gas gauge fluctuate?

I've recently noticed that my gas gauge will be on, lets say right on the half line. Then about 5 mins of driving and it will already be off of the line and below it. Then another 5 mins of driving and it is back up to where it was. This is all when driving on flat roads too. This isn't a major problem just wondering if this happens to anyone else or if I should be reading into it more. When I first got the car I noticed that the gauge was solid and wouldn't fluctuate compared to my previous car and now it is. Also within this amount of time my mpg has dropped nicely. Not sure if this will help at giving any advice.

mine does that too. my theory is that is has a some what MPG guages built in. if you red line it in every gear, its gonna drop and give u an estimate of how much u got left if u continue to drive that way. and vise versa if u drive like an old woman. shifting at 2k, the nedle will go up, telling you how long u will last if you continue to drive that way...this is just my guess.

as for changing when on a hill. when ur on an incline, the gas in the tank shifts and the sensor moves.

Hmm, I dunno about that. Bit it sure sounds cool enough.

This happens to everyone because we have a "floating gas gauge". Depending on whether your going up a hill or down or left or right will all have an effect on what it reads. Is it really that important though? I mean I know, for the most part I can get around 330 miles before I need to fill up 15 more gallons and even that isn't running it bone dry.

That's a problem with the sending unit--in my car, I have my 4th one. It was replaced 3 times under warranty, and mine does that now. However, I'm not sure if my sending unit is bad again, or it's because I get gas in NJ which is full-serve. They do not top-off the tank, and maybe that's why my needle takes a long time to reach F. But before, I would fill it to the point of nearly overflowing, and the needle would stay at 7/8 full.

That's a strange perspective, that a faulty gas gauge is not important? You just estimate 22 mpg and look at the odo? Maybe Fred Flintstone does that but in a modern car people use a fuel gauge.

I mean as far as being slightly off....its not as if I have 1/4 left and it is reading 1/2 of a tank. Not EVERYONES gas gauge is going to be 100% accurate. It is a GAUGE and therefore it is meant to gauge how much fuel is left. Sometimes it may be slightly off but that is a matter of maybe .1 of a gallon or so and when reading your odometer can you really say, " Well I have 14.62376127843 gallons left......no.............

yea i def. notice it fluctuating mostly when i'm low on gas, the light flashes on and off and is somtimes it is dim and then goes brighter.

i like to think that its detecting my gas more precisely when its lightly on but that probably all in my head lol

I had the same problem. let my tank go to below empty and after that a full tank would only register as 3/4 tank. had it replaced under warranty, let tank go to empty once again and it did the same thing, only register 3/4 tank at top off. it was out of warranty so i didnt do anything with it, let it run to empty again and it started to register full tanks again. since then i dont leave it go below 1/4 tank and havent had a problem with it.

i know that cars like benz and bmw, you dont have the wait for the fuel gauge to register, right when you fill up, the needle goes to position right away

Mine goes from F to E about once a week.

How can I make it stay on the F longer?

I hate when that happens, everytime I floor it, the needle moves down and my wallet hurts so bad that I can't stand to do it again. That stupid fuel gauge keeps me from driving fast.

I just filled the car myself yesterday, and the needle went to F right away. The only problem is my airbag lamp starting flashing, so I'm not sure what is best. Don't fill it all the way and have the needle take a long time to get to F, or fill it all the way and cause the airbag lamp to flash!

The lamp didn't go off after I reset it, but it'll hopefully go off soon. I've been dealing with it over 2 years now, and have no intention of paying Nissan to fix it. Countdown to E90!! Long count, 12-18 mos............

My gas guage doesn't fluctuate and if it did I probably wouldn't care less. I always use my trip odometer which helps put mileage into perspective.
