Anybody have legal troubles with tint?`
Just wondering because i dont know if i should get tint or not anymore. I know that in Ohio i'm allowed to have 50%, but 50% is just not dark enough, it'll prolly just look like i have dirty windows.
My question is this, do any of you get into any legal trouble with your illegal tint? I really cannot afford to get any tickets, especially for something stupid like this.

if you cant afford the tickets that will come with the tint, then dont get it.... ive gotten a ticket for tint before, cost me 75 bucks and had to take it off. i dont know what the fine is in ohio but that doesnt seem worth it.

I live in kentucky and im illegal in just fronts, cause rears are allow down to 5%, iv only got 20% all round, i have friends with double 5%, and they havent gotten in trouble. But no one i know here has gotten in trouble.
search the web for your states laws, sometimes u can have like 35%, and get away with like 25 and so on. ive gotten 3) 5-day tags to remove my tint, i eventually had to remove them. however i had the chrome to smoek fade, which do attract more attention, and live in RI where NO TINT whatesoever is allowed unless u have a suv/van/rec vehicle. so i never got $$ tickets for it, but wasted 250 bones on a tint job that lasted about 3 months...sux ***...although i was told i can find people to just stamp the 5-tag tickets if u have tint, but they wouldnt help me out cuz of the chrome smoke fade thing, they said, it's "really illegal" ... do it at your own risk man. and check your states laws so u at least have an idea.

what you should look into is the exemption laws in your state. i live in nyc, i use to get pulled over for tinted windows all the time. finally looked into the exemption laws. in my state, what it says is that the owner of the car is allowed to have tinted windows for certian types of medical conditions (skin cancer/ eye disorders), as long as the owner, or any frequent passanger applies. so really, it doesnt even have to be for you. it can be for a parent, grandparent.. blah blah blah.. if you have a cool doctor you can ask him to write you a note, and then send away for the exemption stickers.
now with the exemption stickers.. they are ugly white stickers, you get one for each window. you are suppose to have them stuck onto the top center of each window, under the tint. they come with a plate number showing. they are VERY ugly. BUT, what they dont come with, is a date saying when they were issued.. (hehe.. <evil grin>)... now its time to exploit that fact. what i use to do is carry them in my car with all my other paper work, ready to hand them over. 9 out of 10 times, the police have never even seen these before, and therefore dont know how there suppose to be mounted. (even though it says it rite on the back).. but since they cant tell when they were issued, i would tell them i just got them about 2 days ago, and i have an appointment in 2 days to have the windows redone. if they ask who they were for, i would say my mother/ father, who ever, cause it doesnt have to be me.
i had, and have now in this car, dark tint(not limo) on all the sides, back window, and 10 inches down the windsheild (legal limit is 4 inches). those stickers saved me alot of money and aggrivation. thankfully, i rarely get stopped anymore, and since im a little older and not driving like a retard (my job helps too), i usually wind up with just a warning..

Similar laws here in utah. 43 % is the darkest the front two can be, but the rest you can paint black if you want. I have 20% over the stock, which I've tested @ like 12%. I've gotten 1 fix-it ticket in 4 years, but I just paid the fine of $40 instead of stripping the front two. If you go like 35% all the way around you will probably not get hassled as much if you had 5% all the way! That is what my girlfriends car has now & she's had no probs yet.
I have 29% on the sides, and 19% on the back window. Been warned once, and pulled over and given a ticket by the same officer. No other officer has pulled me over or said anything about the tint. 50% is legal here, I know what im in for. My interior is tan, so it doesnt even look that dark. Ive got a court date for the first week of april, got my doctors document stating I was ok to get 25% tint, so Ill see if that holds up or not. Otherwise its a $130 ticket to pay. To me, its worth it, makes driving a whole lot easier during the day and at night.
My tint is like 15% all the way around (was on car before I bought it) and im considering getting 5% all the way around just have to get my doctors note to do so to make it "legal" the only thing is I hear a bunch of people in my area still get pulled often and have to show proof of the note, which ends up becoming a hassle getting pulled for nothing illegal. But it will look nice when I do
So the doctor will just give me a note for it if i say that the sun makes my eyes hurt and i cant wear sunglasses because they obstruct my view?
Will i just need to go to a regular family doctor for this?

My tint is illegal, but I got it anyway. I've only gotten 2 tickets for it (one occurance, both front windows), but got it taken away by a friend of mine. Most tints looks darker than they really are, especially at night and in the rain. So be careful.
i just put tints on my max this weekend 20% all around and the car looks way better but im from RI so ill have to see about the tickets hopefully they wont rain on me... anyways i have ny licence so ill keep using the excuse "i just move here and i didnt know" its worked twice before
The paranoia goes away after awhile. I've got 20% all around in a state that doesn't allow any tint up front. I've driven through areas where local cops pull you over for five over the speed limit and not having a front plate even though I was in a front end collision not even three days prior. Not a word about my tint.
If you drive like a normal person and don't have many appearance mods, you will be less likely to be targeted. That being said, sometimes, a cop is out to get you for something stupid like tint or not using your turn signal. You win some, you lose some. In the end, only can decide if it's worth it.

I was pulled over for having tint in brooklyn...(I have N.J. plates and licence) The officer said that my tint was too dark for New York (N.J. forebids front driver/pass tint) So he ran my licence and It was suspended... I was then arrested and spent 28 hours in jail before I saw the judge... Seems that I had a ticket in up-state new york about 2 1/2 years ago and forgot all about it... The fact that I worked for the city didnt help me, the rookie cop was too much of a punk and would rather stay in and do paper work than work the beat... Yeah, my paper work...
Yes, getting pulled over for tint did remind me that I needed to pay the ticket...
But spending time in jail wasnt worth it...
Just If you have tint be prepared to pay a ticket or two If you run into quota deprived cops, And make sure your licence is clean...
Im holding back from bashing thoses guys, because being in jail (even 28 hours) make you hate them even more... thats why Im taking the exam... If you cant beat them, join them...

knowing its illegal and inforced makes you way paranoid, but it fades. im going on 10 months and my fronts are 5%- legal is 50%. anyway- fines aren't too bad- and like jblinga-a fix-it ticket is not that bad. just find out what the fine is OH
i got 3 tickets in penna. just for my tint. i have had police pull me over just for that reason. $104 every time. legal in pa is 85% which isnt even worth having. i had one cop tell me that just the glass actually is like 5% so the tint you can get legally is just 90% which is barely noticable and not even worth having. i just pay the fines when i get them cause its no points on your licsence and it doesnt make your insurance go up. i got 5% all around.
I've got 20% all the way around and i've never had a problem...I was actually pulled over yesterday in NJ for not having my front license plate on and the cop merely told me to "take care of the tint". The catch is that might make some of you more comfortable is that in most states i.e. NJ tint is a secondary violation. That means you can't actually get pulled over for it. If you get pulled over for something else like speeding then you can get a ticket for it. However, even though you can't get pulled over for it, it draws attention and makes cops want to find something else to pull you over for.
Either way i've had tint on for like 2 years and haven't looked back on the decision once

50% helps...it's definitely not as dark as 35%, but it helps. If I had to do it again I would.
............but to your question, even with 50% when I went to get it inspected the guy said "pull your car back out of the garage now" and I asked why. He said "tint on the front is illegal, so I can fail you or you can just go find somewhere else to get it inspected."
At least he gave me the option
. I found somewhere else that didn't notice/didn't care.
Window Tint Reference
Here's a good link I just found about state laws for window tinting.
http://www.textint.com/state.htm
Although, I am confused, because I think they reverse it when they talk about percentages. Either that or I'm reading it wrong.
They indicated Texas (where I live) law allows for 25%LT. From what I read, I got the impression that this means that I could have 25% as it's referred to on the forums here? Meaning that only 25% of the light that hits the window is passed through. Correct? I'll check stickies but I'm pretty sure this is what it means.
Anyway, the page is a little confusing. Make sure to read the "How to use this page", but once you do that it's okay. Hope it helps some of you.
