Alternator, more headaches
Alternator, more headaches
Well after today's reading of codes and getting 0304, This evening driving home my ABS lighty slowly dimmed on, then came the AIRBAG light that began flashing. I got home safely with little battery power left and the car huccupped up the driveway. I ignored the signs earlier when the VOLT and AIRBAG lights were on when I started the car at times. I was meaning to get the alternator tested, but never had the chance and figured it'll last a couple more weeks.
Or at least, I hope its the alternator. The battery is new, the positive cable connection is nice, but I can jiggle the negative connection despite having the screw fully tight on there. I jump started the car and it ran fine with no worries for about 5 mins at idle, then slowly the ABS light came on again and so forth until the car was putting out putt putt putt notes from the muffler.

I let it sit for about 30 minutes, went back to restart it and it turned over fine until it almost drained itself out and I stopped the car...
I'm positive its the alternator.

I removed the bolts to the A/C compressor to get access to the Alternator. Now that I have access to the Alternator, I removed the top bolt. Now here is the tricky part, I remove the screw on one end of the bottom LONG bolt that goes through the lower portion of the alternator. I can't seem to remove the alternator because that long bolt won't fully come out. The body is on the way of the bolt

any suggestions or idea's? I tried hammering the alternator in the other direction but it doesn't move. I dont think there is another bolt I need to remove, as the alternator swings freely on that bolt.

oh man, what kind of trouble are you into? this is bad. bad bad baaaaaaaaad.
first of all, i just did my alty 2 weeks ago. i didn't have to remove any of my ac assemblies except for the ac electrical plug.
second of all, from your picture, it seems to me like your screw was inserted the wrong way. definitely th wrong way. that long screw is supposed to insert from the other way (the y-pipe side). whoever put in that alty of yours must have done it while the engine was pulled out from the bay. what a horrible site to see.
third of all, if you really want to get that screw out, you might have to pull out your engine, or you can drill a hole countering the exit direction of that screw. drilling the hole seems like the best solution for ease.

I thought it was strange also and was thinking the only way this alternator was put in place would be with the engine removed...and why this engine was removed in the first place
The only thing I would believe is that a Technican who put that alternator in placed it on the wrong side. Unless the motor was previously removed for some other reason
I give up, looks like this won't be a DIY and I'm going to have to drive it down the road to have a mechanic install it.

well, you'll be payin around 100-200 bucks for that job.
best thing to do... drill a hole to get that screw out. not too hard for a diy job. try it man, just have to removed the fender well plastic cover first, then everything is down the hills.

By the looks of it, it looks as though I'll have at least two layers of metal to drill through. How were you able to remove your alternator without having to remove the A/C compressor? I was following the Haynes manual on the installation.
