Knock Sensor Code Question

I understand the ks informs the ECU that knocking is occuring and the ECU then retards timing. So, if you have a KS code stored in your ECU (which doesn't trip the CEL) does that mean that your timing is always retarded or that at some point in the recent past it activated and was retarded? Thanks.

hmm. good question. I would say that if you were to clear the codes, pull them again, and the ks is still there, then you have an ongoing issue and it's always being retarded.

The code does not appear if timing has been retarded due to knock.

This is normal operation of the KS. The ECU advances timing as far as it can. When knock is detected, it backs off a little.

The code appears when out of range readings are detected or no sensor is detected at all. If you get the code, clear it. If it comes back, your KS is dead and needs to be replaced.

In other words, yes your timing is always retarded, clearing the code does not clear the trouble, it just takes a while for the ECU to scan it again. Check ebay for "maxima knock",

I have the same thing now and am going to run my ecu codes again tonight to see if it popped back up over the weekend. If so I suppose I will just replace it. I have noticed a drop off in performance and mpg over the last 6 months, probably the culprit. I have heard some of these guys talking about relocating the knock sensor to the firewall to keep it from detecting knock and thus retarding the timing, however isn't the knock sensor there for a reason, you know like keeping your engine from knocking and throwing a rod or damaging the crank?

Sorry this is a little off topic but its related and I didn't want flood the forum with another knock sensor post.

I pulled codes recently and get the wonderful knock sensor code as well as 01 15 which is defined as Fuel INJ Sys Right bank:lean. I am wondering if they could be related. I already ordered a knock sensor and I've looked at the ecu description sticky and it was pretty general as far as what could cause such a thing. If its not the knock sensor causing it would any fuel additives help?

Change the KS reset the ECU and see if the 01 15 comes back

Like you said: "however isn't the knock sensor there for a reason" and you're only going to change it probably once, so I'd suggest leaving it where it is.

So I guess I am looking at a new KS and harness now.

Im also having knock sensor troubles and have been ever since my 02 sensor codes triggered my check engine light. Does anybody know where I can get a new one for cheap? I know of at least 2 brands on the market, does it matter which one I get?
