With the motor on, pull the red dipstick and check the level. There's a level for HOT and COLD. The fluid should be somewhere in between hot and cold if the motor is not warm.

Always check the trans fluid while HOT and IDLING in PARK. There is a dipstick that (for the 4th gen) has a red bulb-like **** on the top on the driver's side of the engine. It has markings for both HOT and COLD but it's supposedly more accurate if you do it when the engine and trans are at operating temperature.

Good luck!

I haven't owned an auto in 7 years, but I used to shift through all the stops, from P through L2, stopping for a few seconds in each position, back to park. Foot on brake pedal of course..........

Don't forget to park on a level surface too....it may seem obvious to point out, but you never know.

Besides looking a nice bright red it should not smell burnt. Any twinge of brown color or burnt smell and you should change it (flush is easy to do yourself).

let car run to operating temp. park on level surface. pull out dip stick. wipe, and reinsert and read, should be between add and full. if you did a flush, make sure you change the filter also.

I think he means the rear main oil seal. Or the Rear valve cover which would both be oil leaks not tranny fluid.

As for your quote mister.. this isn't a repair shop. So i'll quote $5 million. Free oil change with service.
