Breather filter?
#8
really? i've heard they do allow the crankcase to breathe better. never heard about the lower rpm idle. it's not that big of a deal to me, i just figured it's something else to have under the hood. not like im looking to gain 10 hp

well i was thinking about it too, because i dont like the long vacuum hose that goes across the engine bay with the injen intake. thinking about a breather filter to do away with it. eckohb let me know when you locate one that works for us. i looked around on at some K&N breather filters., thats what we need to make sure it isnt cheap junk. still not sure on a size ?

Just so people know the breather is on the front valve cover. The other hose going to the intake is for the idle control valve and has to be metered by the MAF.
I got an APC breather from Advanced Auto. It wasnt very big but I crammed it on there. I also had a Ractive one, again not sure on the size. 12mm is rather small since that hose is about 1/2".
You can get a smaller one to fit by using a small section of the stock hose and putting a brass barb that reduces the size.
As you can see I used the whole stock hose because I didnt want to cut it. I bought the barb from Homedepot.

i tried jamming the thing on there, it wouldnt go on there to save my life. i dont understand what you mean by brass barb? the second pic still has the stock hose connected...im confused...can you explain a little more? the one i have is an APC one from Adv. Auto too.

I also have the breather filter from Advanced Auto I think its the APC one. I put it both on the crankcase and the intake. For the one on the intake I had to take off the rubber part and slip it onto the intake, it fit on snug so it wont fall off. I dont know if it affects anything in a negative way but it doesnt look too bad. This is an old pic and I dont have the red loom anymore but I still have breather filters on both locations (CC and Intake)

this is insane! all you guys have the same one that i have, but it wont fit on my crankcase! fitting it on the intake would be no problem, but the crankcase it just wont go on. Sentinal, nice choice on accenting your engine bay. i have the red loom as well, but where did you get yours from? yours looks like a rubbery material

eckonhb,
I considered a breather filter for my SE but a think the removal a negative pressure from the valve cover is a mistake. The ERG vacuum is there for a reason. If I am looking at it correctly JSutter's second pic is an in-line filter using the stock hose - the best alternative I think. The goal here is to filter exhaust blow-by gases before they are sucked back into the throttle body.
If you are just looking to put a cool looking filter on your valve cover be prepared for sh*t idle response. Others have used oil catch cans in-line with this hose - mostly racers.

I had to get a breather filter because some idiot (me) broke the plastic piece off the intake. I couldn't find one that would fit so, I pulled the rubber boot out of the bottom of the filter and put the old hose into the base of the filter. It doesn't look that great, but it works.

I made that mid pipe and I didnt want the oil entering the intake so I installed a breather.
As you can see, its on the end of the stock hose. This breather did not fit the valve cover so it put it there so I could still use it, and so I could go back and use my stock intake.
It sounds like those of you with idle problems installed it on the IACV. thats a nono.

ok guys check this out... i too had idle probs. related with this issue. before i read this thread i couldnt figure out what was causing my idle to be so low and messy. i would blame it on my highflow cat but now i know it is the breather filter. i mounted my breather filter onto a piece i cut off from the stock intake hose(only way i could get it to mount) my idle and performance went to s**t. i have yet to figure out what is causing my performance loss but i will replace the hose that connects my injen intake to the crankcase and see if this fixes the problems. my car was running better without the damn breather filter. like mentioned before the hose is there for a reason. and i doubt anymembers put their breathers on the iacv because in that case the car will turn off in idle since there is no vacuum effect. im more than positive now that our cars need that hose tohave the best performance.

after reading through the post here I have no idea if we should use a breather filter or not ? even if i did use one i still dont know what or where you buy to plug up the extra intake opening.
im pretty sure this k&N breather filter will work:
K & N Rubber Base Crankcase Filters
Flange ID: 5/8"
Filter Diameter: 2 "
Filter Height: 1-1/2"
Rubber Top Part Number:
Chrome Top Part Number: 62-1340
