Ugh....I have a speed limiter
Ive had the car six months and I finally found a situation where I felt comfortable to wrap it out. Before I could hit 120 its like I hit a brick wall. The rpms fell like crazy. From 100 to 115 took like just a couple seconds. A constant CEL isn't worth going 140 but I found out tonight this car would do it no problem.
Nissan rules!!! I wish I had an SE

No im a pretty careful driver normally. Last night I had a four lane highway all to myself. I wouldn't have gone past 120 anyway becuase I was only trying to find out if it had a speed limiter or not. I believe it cut me off at 115 or so. I know you can mod your ecu but then you have a constant CEL. It isn't worth it because I really have no desire to go that fast in this type of car.

I've been 140, both here and in Germany. The truth is, it's not that dangerous IN THE RIGHT CONDITIONS WITH A GOOD DRIVER. They drive fast in Germany and have fewer crashes than we do (per mile driven). It's a problem here because people can't drive and they don't expect people to be going that fast. I've passed people when I was speeding and they generally get rather scared when you go by. That is dangerous. On an empty highway, going over 100 MPH in a Maxima is reasonaby safe assuming outside factors don't pose a threat (wildlife, poor roads, etc). It's well documented that speeding isn't as bad as they once thought. The danger lies in people moving at different speeds and having distractions. If you saw good drivers on the autobahn you would see my point. It isn't safe here with traffic and there is a limit to what any car can do safely. A pinto isn't safe at 65. A Porsche 959 is relatively safe at 150. It was engineered to cruise at that speed. To say 120 isn't safe in a Maxima isn't necessarily true. Don't give me the blown tire theory or the deer scenario. That's a risk anytime. I would have no problem cruising at 120MPH in my car (proper tires, in perfect mechanical condition etc) if not for the threat of losing my license forever or spending time in jail.

if you rule out all externailities for a situation, obviously EVERYTHING is going to be safe. you forgot about braking distance though, even if your car is safe and in control when cruising, try braking quickly at that distance and things wont be safe.

In this country the vast majority of drivers make driving at anything over 65 unsafe. Braking is an issue but if you're in an area where there is good reason to believe you'll have to stop quickly, it wouldn't be reasonably safe.
I was in Jersey on the pike and I was cruising at 95 MPH. A dry cleaning van passed me. On a road like that the odds of wildlife jumping out are slim. A shredded tire from a truck is a more likely threat. I'm simply saying that there are instances where 100MPH is safe, possibly higher. Like I said, there's always the possibility that something beyond your control will cause problems. It's a matter of knowing what is safe in the environment you're in.
The bottom line is that Americans have very lax requirements for drivers. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to get a license here. I've even read that race car drivers have a higher incidence of crashes when they drive on the highways. It's the people who don't pay attention and you can't count on them doing what they need to be doing that causes problems.
In some countries the shredded tires and dead animals are removed the same day they appear on the road. That eliminates some of the risk. I'm not trying to imply that we can go see Skip Barber and drive 120 anywhere. It's not an option, but 65 isn't always the necessary limit.

I'm not trying to be anti American, I was born here. My mother is German and I go there to see family. Having said that....
Yes, it costs a lot to get a license and you do not get it in High School. It's a private business. You can't drive before you're 18 and you have to know what you're doing before they cut you loose. MANY people don't get it the first time. It's amazing to watch how attentive they are. I've been cruising down the autobahn at 120 and had cars blow by me at 140 plus. Never saw anyone going 200 (or what would seem to be anyway) but I've seen them at 160 or so.
If you look back and see someone in the left lane (yes, far left lane) with their LEFT signal on, well, you move over immediately. You can bet they're going WELL over 120. It's different there. Nobody is talking on the phone, no beating the kids while you drive, no doughnuts and coffee. No roadkill, no tires. Certain times of the day you won't see trucks on the autobahn.
Now, hard to relate that to the states but a good driver in the right car on the right road isn't necessarily being dangerous at 100 MPH. I used to have video I filmed when I was a passenger in a car going 120 MPH (about 180 KPH). I'll see if I can find it. More people would understand.

I do have a question. Why is it that the government preaches to us to go 65 or 70 (maximum) but cops are always speeding? Even when they're not chasing someone, they're always passing people, well, almost always. I even paced one from way out of his hometown going 95 MPH with a prisoner in the back. It wasn't a federal guy, just some town cop from close to the beach. Yes, I PACED him.

Well, if he had to go that bad he needed to stop, I seriously doubt any cop is going to cut me loose if I tell him I'm trying to get somewhere to take a dump.

truth be known, those domestic sleds aren't good for much over 130. They get out of the holes they hide in quick but they're a little lacking on the top end. A rev limiter isn't such a problem for him....now, how do we make our cars faster so we can speed again?

Really, the cruisers don't bother me. It's the radio. I really need to get in touch with Captain Kirk so I can borrow his ride and outrun the Motorola. THAT'S the real problem. Anyone have his number?

GXE's are the only models that have a speed limiter. Although, some GXE's do not have a speed limiter. OH YES ME....

How do I get rid of my top speed limiter?

Only some 4th gen GXEs are limited. If you have an SE or GLE, you have no limiter. The only way to tell if your GXE has one is to hit the road and see how fast you can go. If you have a limiter, your fuel will be cut off and the engine will drop to idle speed at about 115mph.

EDIT:There is no doubt when you have hit the speed limiter. It is not subtle. In the following link, listen to the sound. The accelerator is floored for the entire duration of this clip. The engine cuts of suddenly and the RPMs drop. Actually, at the last second of the clip, you can see the fuel come back on and the RPM start to climb. If your car just eases up to a speed and stops accelerating, you dont have a limiter, your car is just topped out.

Sure, in theory you can do about 140 in any given 4th gen Maxima . Even after you mod the GXE, you can do that speed. The problem is, where ? In suburban Illinois, the cops are fanatical about speed enforcement. Do 110 on an expressway and see what happens to you-and your license. Even if I took my SE out west, 140 is fast enough to get you into serious trouble. At that speed, the safety factors and the margin for error is waaaay smaller. One nail , a jackrabbit in the wrong spot, a semi changing lanes, or a crown vic in the bushes. All conspire to land you and/or your car either in jail, the impound lot,a body shop, or an ER trauma ward. Pulling that stunt on a metro expressway is suicide, an exercise on a deserted stretch of interstate, an act of controlled risk. I'm not saying going 140 MPh is bad, just don't follow the rush with a penal hangover.
