98 Maxima starting problem....

My friends 98 automatic GXE has had a starting problem for a while and nothing seems to fix that. It does not matter if its cold or hot outside, the car does not start the first time. The second try usually gets the car started and once it starts, the rpms flunctuate and feels as if it is going to shut off. It either returns to its normal mode by itself or he has to give it gas.

He just cleaned the throtle body and had a full tuneup done. He has a new knock sensor as well on there. The battery and the terminals are new, and the starter cranks just fine. I am thinking its a sensor but I have no clue which sensor. There is no check engine light on either. Any of you guys have suggestions? Help or this guy is going to sell his car.

Some one mentioned in the past about the coolant temperature sensor, does anyone have info on it and if that sensor is bad then does it show similar symptoms.

Jeff97se probably knows. Of course I would probably say just give the engine an "overhall."

just fixed mine, coolant/engine temp sensor and TPS. got both from autozone less than $70 and it take les than 45 minuts to have it done.

fyi, take the parts out and bring along with you to the part store to match it. the computer in the store will list the different parts for it. i called a head and they told me they need to order it, but when it came it was 2 different thing but it was listed under the vech i own. the TPS i got it's for 95 and up Infiniti but it's not listed under the MAxima.

TPS450 's the part number I use on my 95 Maxima GXE.
my 2 cents
