What does one have to do with the other? The front of sensors monitor the exhaust coming from each bank, WAY before it ever gets to the cat converter.

The only sensor that monitors the cat would be the rear most O2 sensor. The two front sensors are before the Pre-cat (fed-spec) and main cat.

Why not replace both cat and o2 sensor? More than likely, the bad o2 sensor caused the cat to fail. A cat should never fail on its own.

If you want to save money, buy a Universal O2 sensor. It doesn't connect to the factory harness but you splice the wires and connect them to the new O2 sensor (directions are on the box, its very easy). You'll save typically $20+ dollars on one sensor alone doing it this way.
