Gutting Cat or Straight Pipe?

hey guys,
what do you think about gutting the cat(not the one with fur) or putting in a straight pipe. Today me and my buddy decided to disconnect the exhaust right before the cat. It sounded like poop but i liked it loud. I got a little video i will try and upload. Is it bad to run it like that? It was only off for about 10 minutes.

How about gutting the cat? Is it bad to do that? Would it sound any louder? It was very very raspy disconnected (as expected) Just wanted to see if anyone else has tried this or done this before and what you all went with.

OHH BTW: has anyone ever replaced there cat with a glasspack? I saw on the fbody hideout
(lol i know i know mines not a v8) but would it be possible?

Thanks

Sean

If you have ZERO inspections then a straight pipe is much better. Gutting is hard and simply won't flow the as good as a straight pipe would.

Jus stay with the OEM cat.
The gains of using a straight pipe arent great, and their stinky. I have one.
Gutting the cat sounds bad also, its LOUD. I dont really think its as freeflowing as people tend to think it is.
Once its gutted, it becomes a big empty container allowing all the exhaust gases to enter and bounce around before exiting, not a true free flow design.
I know, when my cat failed, loose pieces inside, I went ahead and gutted it completly. After driving around with it for about a week, I put in the straight pipe.
The gutted cat was too loud and annoying.
Ive been running with the straight pipe for over 2 yrs now just for the fact that it was cheap and isnt too loud. It does smell however.
If I were given an OEM cat id install it, but i dont see myself buying one. The straight pipe is fine for now.
The Hi Flow cats dont seem to much better then the OEM cat. Many have had them fail as well, and I dont think they flow too much better then the OEM cat. The OEM cat is pretty free flowing due to the fact of the two precats in the OEM Y, so the cat doesnt really need to be too restrictive.
If you want to free up the exhaust flow, get the Y pipe.

i have the y pipe(warpspeed) and it had wonderful gains. I defiently felt more power. Im just in that situation where i cant decided if i want a full catback (GReddy or Apexi) or if i want to get like a straight pipe, new b pipe, and a universal muffler(flowmaster or magnaflow) Dstyle, how does you Borla XS muffler sound? How about you flavor? How does the apexi catback sound? I dont want something obnixously loud. But it dont want it to quiet. lol i know same as everyone else says.

borla is loud. not too lound, but definatly loud. for instance, i picked a girl up for a date last week and she asked me if my muffler was broken!!!! Well, I hope it doesnt sound that bad, but it is a bit loud. I certainly wouldnt want to hear it with a straight pipe, as im sure it would be unberable. i like my borla set up. plus it was hella cheap.

You don't have to buy a pre fit cat back. You can do what I did. I bought some stainless steel tubing and had it bent to hook up to my budget b pipe and then clamped on to my muffler. This does requere finding a shop with a somewhat skilled mechanic and a mandrel bender, if you want mandrel bends.

dont put a straight pipe on. you will get maybe 1hp gain and your car will sound and smell like ****. plus its unneeded pollution....

The Apexi is a nice exhaust. It has a low rumble, not loud at all.
I sold it to a friend of mine here locally. Dubbya.
You cant get it new anymore, at least not yet. i think the WS2 is to be released some timwe in the future.
I now have the GreddySP. Its a bit louder, but not too crazy.

I cut the cat off and welded a pipe in its place, resonator also. I have a true straight pipe to a n1 exhaust, its very loud but its not an annoying ricey civic sound- its got a low growl that turns into a moan at middle rpms and at high rev its a massive roar...I love it. It does stink though, but me and my friends have this little speed test road a little ways outta town where everyone starts at a stoplight and runs to the speed limit sign- I hang out with a bunch of 4banger kids and they all hit like 70, 72, around there. I was hitting 84, and after the full straight pipe I hit 86-87. Im very happy with the straight pipe.

I think of the test pipe as the lesser of two evils.
