9004-9007 Headlight Housing Mod

For those of you that have done the 9004 - 9007 modification, when you get to the part where you have to shave off the two lower nubs.
Did you have to remove the housing? Or was this able to be done with the housings still on the car? just removing the battery and so on?
Thanks I plan on doing this when I get home as one of my 9004's blew.

I guess it would be possible to do it with the headlights on the car but I wouldn't advise it. I would just take the housings off the car. It would be really hard to see what you are shaving.

I did it with the lights on, I just took a pair of pliers and kind of ground them away until the 9007 bulb fit in. Took about 30sec., just might get some dust and shavings in the headlight housing that way.

A metal file or a small circular cheese grater works wonders

I took my dremel and just smoothed out the numbs on the actual bulb.

I did it with the housings on. I only filed in the direction of the file exiting the housing to minimize debris inside the housing. A little got in there anyway.

Use a box cutter and take a nail filer from your sister. No need to take the housing out.

this is probably a stupid question...but why do you want to change from 9004 to 9007?

9007 provides much more light output and a much sharper cutoff. basically when you change to 9007 you see much better at night.

don't change your housing, change the bulb and cut slits into your 9007 bulbs

Anyone have a pick of what you guys are talking bout? I just bought the Max and will be doing the Basics this weekend (clear corners, hyperwhites, CF Altezzas and Tint if i can find the time) If its that big a difference id like to do it right the first time ya know. On my old car I was an idiot and screwed up the guts of the headlight and it never aligned right again... wanna avoid that by being as well informed as possible!

Definitely groove the lamp bases rather than cut the headlight nubs. A Dremel and a 1/4" diameter cutter wheel does it in no time. Suggestion: while swapping the ground/low wires, add a "tail" of wire to the ground joint, preferably 14ga. - enough to do the ground mod for the headlights. Will save a hassle later on.

It kind of doesnt make any difference, both the 9004 and 9007 bulbs have the same top notch, so either bulb will still fit in correctly if you do this swap. But either way works, and either way you can go back to 9004...not that you'd ever want to.

I just bought an upgraded 9007 harness from ntbk on ebay. Then I switched the ground and the other wire on the input. Works like a charm and gives me even better output.

Better than to keep the housing stock than to cut up 200 dollars worth of headlights for 30 dollar bulbs. If you do shave, the filings might end up in inside the housing which can be a beotch to get out. The top notch fits but the lower slots are at a different angle. You'll see when you compare bulbs.

Its true the 9004 and 9007 have the same top notch but the side notches are different. I dremelled the sides on the area highlighted in yellow.

Yes thats what I'm saying, the top ones are the same so if you get rid of the side 2, you can still use either bulb in the headlight. Honestly when I had the stock headlights I never thought to put new grooves in the bulb, but oh well...I have cefiros now anyways so it doesnt matter.
