Low MPG question

I get about 160-170 miles on a full tank of city driving. Is this normal? I changed the fuel/ail/oil filters fairly recently. I have a CEL for the EGR...perhaps this is the reason?
These gas prices have me thinking is going on...

Thanks

dude..i definitley think that there is something wrong...Check the O2 sensors and more air stuff....make sure that everything is clean...it usually has something to do with clocked up air or something in the system with not enough air

Yes, that's around 9.2 mpg, I'd say there's something wrong with your fuel-to-air ratio.

Well, you should average around 16 to 18 in the city. The max likes to eat a lot of gas in the city but your max sounds like a fat *****. I would first make sure your tire pressure is on par - this is important. Then I am sure that both of your front O2 sensors are shot - Replace them. I bought mine from oxygensensors.com (114 for both shipped if you mention maxima.org). Third, clean your throtle body and put in a bottle of the fuel injector cleaner. These things should bring your gas mileage way up.

Try seafoam, for the fuel, oil, and intake manifold. This should clean out carbon deposits. You'll get some looks from neighboors while your cleaning your manifold.

Check the fluids forum to see how to use it.

And fix the EGR problem.

That is very good to know since I need to replace mine.
So is $114 shipped for the Bosch or Walker or Denso, is it the OE or Universal fit? Do I just call them and ask for a discount b/c of the .org???

thats really not normal to get 170 miles/tank. get that EGR checked out, check your coils, plugs, knock sensor, o2 sensors, tps, check for leaks etc. you should be getting at least 250 miles/tank with city driving.

If you call oxygensenors.com and pay by credit card then its 114 or so. If you pay by money order then its 106 I think. They are walkers - oem ones.

Well if they are going bad they will throw a code but if they are totally dead then it wont. I would replace them anyway since our cars are old now and have a lot of mileage.

I've only got 58K on my 95SE and don't plan on replacing my 02 sensors anytime soon.
Mind you I thought that about my brakes as I still had 40% left on the rears, but the right caliper seized recently. I attribute the seizing to not using the parking brake.

So I guess you're right. Even low mileage cars can be victim of age and rust and moisture buildup.

Yes, if you 02 sensors were bad, you would get a code...take care of 0302 (egr)..most of us in here replaced EGR solenoid valve and that took care of the situation.

check this

Regardless of how much you use it, its still exposed to the elements

Those diagrams scare me...I have no idea of how to do anything under the hood. How much should I expect to pay for the actual part? Labor? I dont want to get ripped off at the mechanic because I know how they are.

Thanks

Don't worry..Easy to replace. .this part is located just before the knock sensor. To take this sucker off it's just one 10mm (IIRC) nut underneath. A small wrench will do that.
egr solenoid part # 14956-31u10

hear are more detailed diagrams.

I actually just calculated my gas mileage this week, got more gas on my way home today to finalize my results, went from full to about 1/4 tank (339.4 miles) and filled up with 11.94 gallons...

339.4/11.99 = 28.42 MPG

This is combined "city" driving and highway driving (always 80mph.. around 3100-3300ish in 5th gear.) I tried not to be biased in this trial, so there was more "spirited driving" associated with my city driving then I normally have, and shifted pretty high getting onto the highway to try and drive down my mileage so it was less accurate then normal just so I would know what my worst case scenario would be.

But 9 MPG is something horrid, you need to fix that buddy... sorry to hear that your max is being mean to you!

That's pretty decent mileage assuming you filled the car right up to the brim or wherever it was before the trial. A longer test, say 16-17 gallons, would be more accurate but if that brought more city driving into the mix it wouldn't be representative. Sounds to me like your car is in tune and running well.

where do you get 11.99?
It takes about 17.5 Gallon for empty gas tank.....

You should should check to see if you have a bad KS. And what type of gas do you use?

I didn't goto empty, went from full to just a smidgen above 1/4 .. i figured 3/4 of a tank is enough to calculate the MPG.

And when I fillup just after my gas light comes on, it's no where near 17.5 gallons... I've only gotten just above 15 gallons once, myself.

My car is only at 77k, oil changed under 1k ago, just cleaned air filter, make tire pressures perfect each week (no they don't change much but I check them regularly) .. so it better get good gas milage the way I baby it

My test was from a complete fillup (always 93) and refilled at the same station, same pump.

Like I said before, you don't need a new EGR valve, those things hardly fail, You need to order part # 14956-31u10 , sometimes referred to as purge control valve or Egr solenoid valve, you can order it at your local nissan dealer
or www.jerryromenissan.com. cost $62. Don't worry , like I said , its easy to replace. Just follow those instructions on the previous posts.

WOW. That means you could travel from LA to NY on one tank of gas. How do you get such great gas mileage?

At 300 miles per gallon...you're doing better than those hybrid automobiles.
