GXE --> SE

Im trying to find an SE here in Oregon, but it just is not going to happen. There are plenty of low mile gxe's in the area. So, the gxe vs the se.

GXE has less sporty suspension
No Fogs
Possible Wireless Key
Possible Sunroof
Automatic on GXE

What else is the main differences that would deter me from the GXE?

i drive a gxe
i just picked up fogs
came with a sunroof and keyless
and i desperately want aftermarket springs and struts soon

id say your major setbacks with gxes would be finding a manual
the chrome trim and door handles
and spoiler

You can get a GXE with a 5-speed and a sunroof. You are more likely to find an SE with leather than a GXE with leather. The suspension is not a consideraton if you intend to modify the suspension at any rate.

Read the sticky to see the differences. There was also another thread on the differences this week.

Lest we not forget the speed limiter. GXE has it...SE doesn't. I'd wait for an SE and be willing to drive a state or to for a good 5spd SE. Have you looked at autotrader.com?

Well, do you plan on keeping it stock?
If not, then it doesnt matter.
I have a GXE and my suspenion is better then an SE
I have SE gauges
Body colored door handles
Front seat swap (no need for power/heated SE seats)
JWT ecu, with raised rev limiter plus no speed limiter
ect, etc, etc,

Suspension im sure I will get around to doing. The ECU is the same I believe, and I thought it was find in my 95 GLE. I like the chrome door handles, so that works.

Speed limiter... Ive only brought my MAX up to 115's so I am not too worried about ever wanting to get rid of that. If I start taking it to the track or something I might do the speed limiter mod.

Autotrader: Thats my primary source for looking, but most the maximas 96-98 are 140k, and the 100k are around 8grand. So its just a hard thing to find in between. Mostly dealers and I am not a fan, so I look for private sellers.

Speaking of autotrader, mines on there right now...

I have no limiter and can attest to what one of the car magazines (Motor Trend or Car and Driver or Road & Track) published in 1994. A 1995 Maxima SE is capable of 143 mph. Been there, done that and a little more eight years ago. Never again!

most gxe's have speed gov that cuts off at about 118mph. can be eliminated in a matter of a couple of minutes w/ a toggle switch.

my GXE cuts off at right around 118...larry, is it easy to install the toggle switch, as opposed to just cutting the wire? Also would a toggle switch still make the CEL turn on?

its so easy! after you cut the wire extend it on each end to the area that you want the toggle switch. hook both wires to the toggle switch and when the toggle switch is on your speed gov. will be in affect and you wont have a cel. when you need to go over 118mph (for closed course racing only) then flip the switch. flipping the switch to off is basically the same thing as cutting the wire. as long as you dont keep it switched for long periods of time the cel wont light up.

Something else,

Not all the GXE's come with ABS. I'm pretty sure its standard on the SE (later models anyway). The GXE doesn't have the sportier steering wheel either.

I'm pretty sure ABS is pretty populiar on GLE's, most of the ones that i'm looking at have it anyway. Then again, i live in illinois.

Maybe they just did in Canada...or maybe I'm just wrong...all the SE's GLE's I've seen up here so far have it. I guess if it's important to you, you'll have to check each car you're looking at.

abs is not standard on GXE, SE or GLE in the US. I don't think leather was available on a GXE either. If you want an SE, wait aound for one. I waited several months. You'll be glad you did.

When looking for a 5 speed maxima, I found my GXE to be much more rare than finding an SE (5speed vs 5speed). I preferred it because I was planning to upgrade my audio & suspension. The only thing I really missed from the SE was the LSD transmission (which isn't available in the US anyways).

Its possible to find a SE with all of the GLE options such as leather, Bose, Heated Leather, etc.

And, you get the fun suspension and 5spd!

Luxury and Performance!

Ya gotta love it!

If you don't get what you want, you won't be fully happy with it.
I wanted a black 5 speed SE 97 w/ sunroof, etc. Went to the dealer in Jan. 2000 he found me one in November. It was worth the wait. Another thing you might try is to get one off eBay that is only a couple states away and pay the transport, it may be better than settling for something you didn't really want.
