I would go for the ECU/VI combo, but I don't have any experiecences with the tq converter.

well the ecu is best all around mod, increase performance throughout the power band. 2kvi is for increased top end performance till redline. i have no clue on tq converter. now the 2kvi has good potential but is liited cause of the redline, with an extended redline (ecu) you get better maximum performance from the VI, id personaly go the ECU route 1st, then VI, then TQ converter or maybe VB mod. consider a VB mod also.

can someone explain the type of gains a TQ converter can produce on a maxima, i know on other cars they can help quite a bit.

EDIT*****
i personaly also factor ease of instalation into my decision also, ecu is like an hour or less to take out, put in. VI may take quite a while, and i can surely imagine the TQ converter will take a while to do.
