Hard to Start; Must turn key 5+ times before engine turns
I have a 1997 Maxima SE with a 5 speed tranny; 182K miles; 12 months on new clutch; 6+ months on rebuilt tranny.
The first symptom I experienced was a prolonged starter/engine turn time before engine would start. I had to hold the key in the start position for 5 or more seconds before the engine would start. This happened for two weeks, before the starter/engine would not turn at all.
I replaced the starter with a newly rebuilt unit. This was two weeks ago. For the first couple of days, all was fine.
Now, when I turn the key to start the car, nothing happens except for the sound of a click. The start does not turn. After I do this for 5 or 6 attempts, the starter spins and the car starts.
Any ideas?
Thank you for your replies.

It's either the ignition switch or another starter issue.
Being you just replaced the starter, I'd check around that area first, you could have a defective starter.

faulty ignition switch. replace with a new one.
P/N is 48750-1E411 around $31.75
and is really easy to change. you need a really short phillips(about 2 inche long) to take out one of the screws that holds the switch. and you'll need a really long phillips also to remove the lower panel and steering wheel coloum covers.
