Need clutch advice!

Starting to have some issues with my Exedy OEM replacement clutch so I'm thinking of a new one. Car is bone stock and will probably only ever get Y-pipe and ECU as far as performance mods go.

I got this clutch about 11,000 miles ago when I got my 5spd swap. It's been chattering at times for the past few thousand miles, and that's not going away. It has been badly mistreated a couple of times (too much slip), but it seems to manage my everyday aggressive driving without a hint of a problem.

Then a couple of days ago when I was stop-and-go on the highway for a while and then slipped the clutch just a little too much trying to shoot off up the hill at the bottom of the offramp... the damn thing overheated so badly that it wouldn't hold anything over 3000 rpm in any gear for a few minutes. It's 100% okay in daily driving, but now my bro's Teg toasts me in a drag race.

It's not like I'm slipping the thing from 4k (learned my lesson... ) I don't even care that my brother's car is quicker than mine (even though it shouldn't be). I just want something with a relatively light pedal and no chatter that I can still launch briskly every once in a while without being afraid that I'll burn something.

Any ideas?

well seems like you have a little bit of learning to do as far as launching you're car. Might as well get that out of hte way on this clutch, THEN buy a new one. I would suggest the 5th gen oem clutch.

Agreed... I just want to figure out what I'm getting now so that I can plan for it and make sure I'm ready if this thing starts dying, you know?

I've been hearing conflicting reviews about the SPEC Stage 2 kit. Anyone have any opinions on that?

It's not like I take it up to 3k just pulling away from stop lights. I rarely even do hard takeoffs, and I rev-match all my downshifts. I only burned it a few times when I was really psyched to get a 5-speed and tried to launch it without knowing how. This last time when I slipped it too much trying to get up the hill was a mistake -- I just got off the clutch a little too slowly. I understand that too much slip will burn it, but I'm just saying it seems a little too finicky and I want something that is more durable.

Yeah I broke it in... very delicate for the first 500 or so miles, and then no thrashing until 1k. Now it's at 11k and still a little chattery (it wasn't at first).

I just drove fairly hard on it today on the way back from work and it seems totally fine for now, so I'm probably just an idiot with drag launching. I definitely want a smoother, more consistent clutch though... I think this one has a far too heavy pedal feel for how well it grabs.

I'm thinking Exedy stage 1, SPEC stage 2, or something from Clutchnet. Suggestions?

spec stage 2 clutch is very good at first. it's got the light pedal feeling that you want.

but after about 6 months of abusive driving, my clutch slipped already. it's slipping during the 3rd gear engagment during redline driving, and my redline is 7200, so figure.

anyways, i'm working on getting a stage 3 clutch since all spec's use the same pressure plate, i'll just have to get a clutch disc, the pressure plate will stay.

the only reason for this clutch is my abusive driving. my max seeks redline everytime i drive the car. and this kevlar clutch disc (bullet proof material) just couldn't hold out any longer. also, the car had absolutely no chattering in the beginning, but after i slip the clutch, chattering also occurs.

i read from the mustang forum that many mustang enthusiasts are using spec stage 2's, but they mentioned that chattering occurs from the tiniest dust exiting between the flywheel friction surface and the clutch disc. so dirt tolerance for this clutch is very bad. consequently, i'll got for the stage 3 steel carbide clutch disc, this should last me much longer than the kevlar.

I have the 5th gen clutch, best d@mn thing I ever did for my car. In the beggining I couldn't get 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th gearto engage smoothly, that's how hard it bites (you learn to do it after a while tho). I've put about 1500 miles on it. I baby'd it for 650 miles (break in is 500, i did 650 just in case), then I've been beating on it since and its taken the abuse like a champ. Even after repeated redline powershifts on the highway, then down to street roads, it hasn't slipped on me once . Oh and pedal feels just like stock to me. I got the whole thing (disc, p/p, t/o bearing) from DaveB (the parts guy) for I think $182+ shipping.

I'm about to order the 5th gen clutch + misc parts from Everything Nissan. If you are interested in this, go to this thread. All parts needed will cost around $162 total, which is a hell of a deal!

Also, don't peel off on take off all the time. That's a #1 way to burn out your clutch. Also, check to make sure you have no rear main seal leak. My clutch would have lasted me longer, but because of this leak, its beginning to soak my clutch in oil. Since I have to replace this seal, I might as well put in a new clutch. 5th gen clutch is the way to go if you are not planning to boost big, better bite. Stage2 setups are a waste of time, unless you are planning to boost. You mentioned initially that you will probably only get a ypipe and ECU mod. So Stage2 setups are very impractical plus your clutch pedal will be way stiffer. If you are still not used to the regular clutch, the feel you'll get from the Stage2 will totally throw you off. Just my 2 cent.
