tach is wrong and slow!!!

I don't know what would cause this but the tach seems to be off on rpm and very slow to react to a change in engine speed. This is on my friend's 95' 5-speed. I know this is not normal because at same speed and gear in my 96' 5-speed his tach reads different rpm. His tach also reacts very slow to change in engine rpm. If you floor it in neutral you hit the rev limiter before the tach says 3000 rpm. Plzzz help!!

bump... come on, someone here's gotta be a mechanic or something. CEL is not on but tach has a slow reading that is about 500 rpm off. What sensor feeds the tach? What could problem be? car is running fine but it's my friends first stick so he needs a working tach.

You need a new cluster, the tach is shot. I have one from a 96, black face reads about 97000 miles. Your buddy can have it for a small fee, PM me if your interested.

can you change the gauges out without changing out the odometer? Isn't it illegal to put in an odo with less miles?

Im gonna take out the tach one of these days and switch it with mine to rule out sensor problems, if it turns out being odometer like you say, I might be interested in your cluster. I gotta talk it over with him first though.
