transmission whining noise

I've read a few threads about the noise I'm experiencing but I still have a few questions.
I have a whining noise from my 5sp tranny and I hear it most in 2nd, 3rd, 4th gears about 1.5-2k rpm. I had Redline MT-90 put in the tranny back at about 15k miles on the car. I've had it changed twice since then; the soonest was at about 110k. Currently, I have 116k. Still original clutch and tranny. I don't have any leaks at all. My clutch is being replaced with an OEM this week. I was wondering which bearing is causing this whining noise I hear? They are replacing the pilot and throwout bearings with the clutch.
Is this noise from what's the called the diff bearing or something else internal? Should I get a rebuild or replace? If I deal with the noise for now and don't do anything what eventually will happen to the tranny? I understand it may "go" but will I be in any danger when it does? Thanks.

Welcome to the My differential bearing are F**king up my tranny club.

its the differential bearings that cause the whining, maybe also the shims. This problem should be easily fixed with a rebuilt, no need for a whole new tranny unless there is more damage than expected.

You can go for a while on this whine (I'm still going on it) it will just progressively get worse and you'll be able to tell, it will leak at some point (could take a few days or a few months to eventually leak), it will soak you clutch so slipping will start to occur, and after a while it should leak out of the bell housing onto the ground in which you know for sure you got a problem and will need to get it fixed. Fortunatly I believe you can ride out this problem for quite a long time.

until you hear the whining in all 5 gears ... then get rid of your tranny and find a 5-spd from a 5th gen.

I have been researching this cause I have the same problem. I don't think the 5th gen non-locking transmissions are immune to this problem. I have seen a couple on ebay out of 00-01 maximas that have been rebuilt because of bad bearings. There was also one in the classifieds a month or so ago out of an 00 that had bad bearings. Unless you get the VLSD I think you are still rolling the dice so to speak when getting a 95-01 manual transmission.

the problem was mainly with transmission 95-98 some 99s might have it, but by the time the 5th gen was released the issue was next to non existant, not saying it cant happen with the 00-01 trannies but is far less likely.

I have a 99 but it's one of the first biult of the year. I'm having the clutch replaced this week and wondered if since it's all apart to have a new tranny put on. At least save on labor. I noticed the noise probably close to a year now but it certainly is much louder than when I first heard it. I spoke to one local shop and they said that if I was to put in dino oil instead of the redline currently in the tranny the noise would quiet down some. Is that a good idea. I figure staying with the redline would be better for the trans. Thoughts?

In any case, I guess I should look into a newer less mileage tranny. A VLSD would be great!

Do you think that these newer cars just aren't old enough for this problem to be common like they are on the 95-98? If a 00-01 non-locking trans bolts right up to the 4th gen I am wondering how much if any changes were made to the internals in that thing. There is a thread in the stickies about this bearing problem that is a few years old and when that thread started people were suspecting that only the 95-96 models were plagued with this problem. Fast forward a few years and now the 98-99's are having it too. Maybe in a couple of years the 00-01 guys will have cars that are spewing gear oil too?
