shortening the shifter

whos got their shifter cut down?
You know, taping down the stck, then sawing it down.
Testimonials?
Ive done it on a few cars, works fine, but their was one car that it made shifting too hard, Im curious if the Max maybe included into this group.

:::EDIT:::

Here is this site to do it properly.

Here is the ORG site about how it feels

ive done it, cut it off just below the threads. as far as impressions- i didnt cut it enough, the throw didnt change at all its just for asthetic purposes but it does look better. just make sure you have a **** to put on afterwards cause your stocker wont work. oh and its a good idea to put a plastic bag over the shaft while your cutting or else shavings will go everywhere

just tried it with my dremel. had an old aftermarket **** laying around... looks good, nice and easy you just have to take your time or you'll keep braking wheels.. i took about an inch off, should have done more too, maybe 1.5" to 2"..

Isnt it better to replace with a short shifter instead, dont you get a lil more lever that way?

i have a choped down STS, and once choped down it made it alittle more knotchy. If you have the stock shifter you will notice alittle change but it will not be to bad. When i had my stock in i chopped it down about inch and a half and i loved it. i just got a saw went out in the car and put a sheet down so shavings would not go everywhere and went at it. i dremels those 2 pieces that stick out off, and put on a aftermarket ****.

It is a Tap & Die Set. They are about 100 bux or so, every mechanic can use one, they are great for customizing things.

Some aftermarket shift ***** use 3 allen key screws around the outside of the ****, these usually bite into a rubber sleave you put on the shifter to hold it tight and stop it turning on you when you shift.

Yea and generally speaking they suck (from my experience.) If you do use an aftermarket **** that has set screws make sure you get it done right the first time and don't need to take it apart many times (like I did) from tightening those set screws enough times it actually STRIPPED THE THREAD ON THE SHIFT **** ... so I had to do some customization to make my MOMO **** stay put after that...

I also cut my STS down....

Cutting the stock down is purely cosmetic.It will not shorten the throw just by lowering it.
If after you cut it, and if it feels notchy install some syn. trans fluid and you will be surprised how good it will feel. You should do it anyways. The Maxima tranny isnt the smoothest of trannies.
