you can do it without taking off your IM, and i personaly would leave it on just to save mess and hassle [gaskets?]. i would rather a couple sore knuckles
Motorvate.ca
this is a populare site with Maxima DIY's and hes got a good write up on how to replace your KS leaving the IM on. gooood luck, post results! i need to change mine out too just havent gotten the part yet

Pick up a hanyes manual... it will help you out a lot not only with that, but in the future. I have removed my intake manifold before to clean it all out... it's pretty much common sense.

KS was 79 bucks. i tried not to remove the manifold and it is a biotch.
i read the write up but its too tight under the manifold. can i spray wd40 on the bolt to help loosen it? will it damage anything around the knock sensor?thanks

if your car's not cali spec, it's not that hard at all...you may want to try reaching your left hand in there instead of your right, you'll find that you have a lot more space. you do have to break the bolt loose, and that requires some force. get the socket onto the bolt, and give it hell. it should come out pretty easily. I did mine for the first time in a matter of 25 minutes.

a tiny trick but not realy, try putting a short socket onto the bolt first and then push the ratchet on, if its realy too tight. that might help a small bit. its helped a couple times for me
also where'd you buy your KS? anyone know where to get one cheap, i dont want to find a good looking deal and then buy garbage! thx

IM removal is easy with a Haynes manual. Just read it, look at everything that's attached to the IM, disconnect, and remove.
