100 bucks, a day off, and a junk yard

I picked-up the following items for my 97 GXE today at a local junk yard. I paid $100.

1. SE (white face) gauge cluster and plastic trim with cruise/dimmer/security
controls
2. fog light frames
3. fog light/headlight switch
4. shifter boot
5. leather wrapped shift ****
6. Good floor mats

This made quite a difference in the looks of my interior. I should have talked the guy down to $50 but I'll make up for it next time. Once I get the bulbs for the fog lights, I will be in phat city.

Anybody made any great junkyard deals lately?

man I wish I had a good junk yard up here. I get tired of hitting up these junk yards when all they carry is junk. I have yet to see a fourth gen or anything from the late 90's.

the junkyard in my town has maybe one and a half 4th gens (one is completely parted out) and maybe 4 3rd gens. i'll probably go back again at the end of the summer or maybe next summer to see if any 4th gen owners have totalled their cars lately

The junkyard guys are pretty savvy where I'm from. I backed into a post in January and broke my right rear tail light assembly. Nissan wanted about Cdn$140 including taxes. I got one at a junkyard for Cdn$95 when I was hoping it would be $50. The only consolation is the guy installed it for me and it took him about 1/2 hour on a cold, windy day. He had a b!tch of a time breaking the seal on the old tail light - a hair dryer would have helped, but they didn't have any at the junkyard, lol!

I also checked around for rear calipers a month ago and I found one set that they wanted an arm and a leg for, so I just bought a pair of rebuilt calipers.

I once bought a 4th gen ECU for $15 and sold it for $115. It was from a salvage yard. Hood struts $5, autotragic computer: $10, instrument cluster $5.

I once scored not one but TWO glass sunroofs for my 1980 RX7 for $15 each. Also, a LSD rear with discs for my RX7 for $40 (plus driveshaft). A whole pocket full of ignitors for $10 (like $100 each new), a dizzy for $15, and a 4th gen rad and fans for $15. I also got a Ford 3.8L slimline cooling fan for $10 and converted my Rex to an electric cooling fan...oh yeah, rear hatch struts for like $5 each for the Rex. Talk about awesome salvage yard mods!

Damn...I love pull it yourself salvage yards. I need to get up there again soon! Patience is a virture up there. I'm hoping to score a leather interior soon. I almost had one from an I30 but there was a slight tear in the passenger seat. Cost? $175 for all the seats. I also got some spare interior trim pieces for the Max.

For those in the Mass area, Greenleaf Auto Recyclers in Leominster, MA has a great selection of 4th and even 5th Gen maximas. This is the first place I've seen 5th Gen and they have half a dozen. More 4th Gens. Its a goldmine.

thanks a lot man!! i'll have to check it out, but i have a feeling it might be a bit of a ride for me...

edit: just looked it up on mapquest, should only be like 25 min drive!

another edit: is it the type of place where you can walk in and look for parts yourself?

They are not as good about it as some. You have to tell a guy at the front desk what you're looking for. But if you tell them you are looking for miscellaneous interior parts (not computer inventoried) then you shouldn't have a problem. There are two signs up saying: 1) $50 minimum for yard purchases; and 2) We pull parts when you tell us what you want. They don't seem to adhere to their policy though. Do yourself a favor, pull as much as you can and bring it all up at once. They are very professional and keep alot inventoried by computer. However, they don't seem to sweat the smaller items. There are about 5 rows of maximas/altimas. Its a long walk from the parking lot so bring a few tools with you when you go out. Happy hunting!
