The differences between the GXE, SE and GLE have nothing to do with the engine, they are exactly the same. The GXE comes with the lowest level of standard equipment and a soft suspension setup. The SE comes with a firmer suspension, some cosmetic differences like foglights and white colored dashboard and the 5 speed/automatic option. The GLE comes with almost all options standard, is auto only and also has a floaty suspension, but comes with a slghtly different suspension setup (rubber vs. urethane bushings) and a 'computer controlled engine mount' setup. The third gens had different engines between model levels.
