ceramic or semi?

so i need to replace the front brake pads on the max, and i was trying to decide between ceramic and semi-metallic pads. i heard that ceramic dont make any brake dust so your rims dont get nasty. is this true? is there any other advantage to ceramic, opposed to semi? what should i get? brands?

ceramic brakes better, and yes, you do get brake dust.
semi will wear out faster and heat up faster also.

Bought a front set of Bosch ceramics for around $58. They work great, dust less and stop quick.

I bought the Raybestos PGD540 recently for the rear. They are semi-metallic and leave no brake dust whatsoever. I was told that the ceramic pads have a tendency to squeal.

Not a sound out of mine for six months now. I had actually been told the ceramics were quieter and so far this is true.

I don't use my brakes anyway so it doesn't make any difference to me what pads I've got. Has Hawk got you on commission or what, CystumMax? You post their website everyday, lol!

Another vote here for Hawks. Excellent braking performance and not a noise using them with stock rotors.

dont get semi-metallic. very noisy and have a grinding noise to it when heated up. unfortunately im running on semi-metallic and its nasty but still brakes hard. funny thing is that i have a lot of pad left after a couple thousand miles already. but id rather go with ceramic.

Hawk Performance HPS Road/Sport disc brake pads are designed for sports cars, coupes, sedans and pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles used for high speed driving or that may encounter repetitive heavy braking. Hawk Performance HPS Ferro-Carbon compound brake pads provide advanced braking characteristics to enhance the driving experience. This unique compound combines the safety and quality of Aerospace design partnered with the braking technology of Motorsports.

Hawk Performance HPS pads offer 20-40% more stopping power and higher resistance to brake fade than most original equipment or standard replacement pads. This makes them more responsive and durable than most standard original brakes and makes Hawk Performance HPS pads the first …and least expensive…way to increase the stopping power of cars and light trucks.

As standard brake pads wear, brake dust is released as the friction material wears in everyday braking. Hawk Performance HPS brake pads are formulated to run cleaner and release extremely low levels of dust in normal street driving.

Key Features and Benefits of Hawk Performance HPS Brake Pads:

High friction/torque hot or cold
Gentle on rotors
Very quiet, low noise
Improved braking over OE pads
Extended pad life
Brake pads are wear items and as such, should be inspected regularly and replaced as necessary. Pads should be replaced when approximately 1/8th inch of friction material remains on the steel backing plate.

NOTE:

Even though Hawk Performance burnishes its brake pads as a final step in the factory, all brake pads have to be bedded-in with the rotors (new or used) that they will be used against. Properly bedding-in new brake pads results in a transfer film being generated at the pad and rotor interface to maximize brake performance.

NOTE: BRAKES ARE A SAFETY CRITICAL PART OF A MOTOR VEHICLE.

Brake components should be installed by a competent mechanic in a professional manner. Any incorrect installation of brake components can cause a major safety problem or an accident. If you are not a competent and qualified mechanic you should not attempt to install these products, but should take the vehicle to a vehicle dealer or competent automotive mechanic for their installation.

Disc brake pads and rotors are wear items and as such, should be inspected regularly and replaced as necessary. Read More.
