Clutch Question

My clutch pedal will vary in resistance when used. Sometimes it's real easy to push in, and sometimes it will get hard (enough to feel a difference) plus when it gets hard to push, there will be a muted rubbing type of noise when the pedal is pushed. Could the slave cylinder cause the pedal to have noticeable difference in effort? There are no problems with the actual clutch engaging or disengaging, just the effort that is sometimes required to push the pedal. Would y'all recommend just replacing the slave and see how that feels? Also is there any lubrication requirement for the pedal assembly itself?

Yeah, try bleeding the line.
That is an easy way to see if it is just a bubble in your line or something.

It could be any number of things. I kind of had a similar thing a little while back, and found out that it was just a hose sweat. Sometimes, when the hoses for these things get a little old and worn, they will sweat out the fluid at different times, causing weird things to happen to the fluid level in the resevoir. The hose is not really hard to replace. On my 1999, there were actually two different hoses, so make sure you show somebody at NAPA or something, rather than just believing them. They told me there was only one hose, and then, I got down there to it, and there were two of them. Neither of the hoses are really expensive.

After that, I guess I would try the slave cylinder.

Hope that helps...

Thanks, guys. I think I'll do both flush and replace the slave and get stainless as well, with a new clutch not too far down the road. That'll be one area taken care fairly quickly.
